Participating in three clean-up drives in Surat was a transformative experience that deepened my understanding of environmental responsibility and community service. Through these initiatives, I faced challenges, developed new skills, and learned the value of perseverance and teamwork. Engaging with global issues like pollution and waste management, I also reflected on the ethical impact of our daily choices. This blog captures my key learnings and experiences from these impactful clean-up drives.
LO2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills.
Participating in the clean-up drives in Surat was both physically demanding and eye-opening. Collecting waste from public areas required endurance, teamwork, and problem-solving, especially when faced with hazardous materials or uncooperative community members. I learned how to efficiently segregate waste and communicate with people to raise awareness about responsible disposal. This experience helped me develop patience, adaptability, and leadership skills, all of which will benefit me in future service initiatives.
LO4 – Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience.
Despite the challenges, I remained committed to the clean-up drives, ensuring I contributed consistently. The early mornings, long hours, and occasional setbacks, such as re-littering of cleaned areas, were discouraging at times. However, I reminded myself of the positive impact we were making, which motivated me to keep going. My perseverance was evident in my continued participation and my effort to encourage others to join in, reinforcing my dedication to community service.
LO5 – Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively.
The clean-up drives required strong teamwork to be efficient and effective. I collaborated with a diverse group of volunteers, delegating tasks based on individual strengths and ensuring smooth coordination. Working together allowed us to cover larger areas and complete the clean-up more quickly. I also learned the importance of communication and shared responsibility, realizing that collective effort leads to greater impact.
LO6 – Engagement with issues of global significance.
Pollution and waste management are pressing global issues, and through these clean-up drives, I directly engaged with this problem at a local level. Seeing the amount of plastic waste in public spaces reinforced the importance of reducing single-use plastics and promoting sustainable practices. This experience connected me to larger environmental movements, inspiring me to be more mindful of my own waste consumption and to advocate for sustainable solutions.
LO7 – Recognise and consider the ethics of choices and actions.
The clean-up drives made me reflect on the ethical implications of waste management and environmental responsibility. I realized that my actions whether it was properly disposing of trash or educating other had ethical consequences. I also considered the impact of consumerism and corporate waste, understanding that sustainability is not just an individual responsibility but a collective one. These experiences pushed me to make more conscious choices in my daily life, such as reducing waste and supporting eco-friendly initiatives.
