Community Cleanup was a new and impactful experience for me. While I had always heard about such initiatives and wished to contribute, I had never participated until this CAS activity provided the perfect opportunity to engage in something meaningful. During our cleanup drives, we visited locations like ponds and riverfronts, collecting waste under the guidance of a mentor.

Our first session took us to a pond covered with duckweed, and our task was to clean a patch of it. The mentor explained how duckweed negatively impacts the pond ecosystem, underscoring the environmental importance of our task (LOI 6). It was eye-opening to learn how our small actions could contribute to the larger issue of maintaining ecological balance and preserving aquatic habitats.

When the mentor informed us that some participants would need to enter the pond to clear the duckweed, there was significant resistance, including from me. I wasn’t initially willing to get into the pond water, but I chose to assist by clearing the duckweed from the edges. Seeing some of my peers take the lead inspired me, and by the end of the drive, I felt a sense of accomplishment looking at the now-cleared patch of the pond. This experience underscored the importance of engaging with environmental challenges that have global significance.

As we continued with our cleanup drives, it became clear that perseverance and commitment (LOI 4) were essential. Each drive presented challenges, including skeptical looks from onlookers, who often questioned why we were participating in such activities. Despite this, we remained steadfast, focusing on our goal of contributing to a cleaner environment. The experience taught me resilience and the value of teamwork, as each member played a crucial role in the collective effort.
