Community Service

For my CAS experience, I participated in community service which was conducted at Fountainhead School on weekends from 5th August to 20th August. As a part of this experience, we were required to teach any new extracurricular skill or hobby to underprivileged students from schools that could not provide adequate facilities to develop any form of extracurricular talent for their students. We were allowed to select categories in which we would participate and teach the students that particular hobby or skill, hence I decided to select the category of football as it is a sport that has fascinated me since childhood.

The goals I intended to achieve by participating in this experience were as follows…
-Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills (Learning Goal 2).

I developed social and communication skills as the students didn’t understand English and I was required to give instructions to the students in Hindi and in some cases Gujarati as well. The overcoming of the language barrier allowed me to achieve Learning Goal 2 (Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills).

-Show perseverance and commitment in the CAS experience. (Learning Goal 4)

By attending all sessions every weekend, I showcased perseverance and commitment in a CAS experience which helped me in achieving learning goal 4 (Showcase Preseverance and Commitment in a CAS experience)because I did not miss a single day as a volunteer at the Community service and was genuinely interested in helping the students attending the sessions understand how to play the sport of football.

-Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively (Learning Goal 5)

I was also allowed to lead the football program along with 2 other people which helped me focus on learning goal 5 (Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively) as it allowed me to demonstrate social skills and recognize that it was quite beneficial to work collaboratively with several other volunteers as it would be quite impractical to handle all the children assigned to our group because there were so many children.

In summary, the CAS experience of Community Service was quite beneficial as it helped me focus on 3 learning goals and provided an opportunity for me to teach underprivileged students a sport that I have cherished since childhood.

Community service led me to achieve LO6 and LO7 as I actively delt with issues of global significance and also considered the ethical implications of my actions as I would be aiding underprivileged children by providing them facilities which led to their holistic development which in a sense helped combat global education inequality leading to the fullfillment of LO6 and since my actions were ethical in nature as I did not try to influence their mind towards a particular way of thinking it was ethical leading to fullfillment of LO7
