I was given the amazing chance to take part in a CAS initiative in August 2023 that aimed to give educational workshops to our community’s underprivileged students. The goal of this program was to give these students useful skills and new experiences in a variety of subjects, including ICT, football, dancing, arts and crafts, and more. I made the decision to volunteer for the ICT workshop because I realized how important technology is becoming in today’s world.

I concentrated on thoroughly demystifying Chromebooks and the internet for the students during the workshop sessions. We started by going over the basics, showing them how to turn on a Chromebook, use the keyboard and touchpad, and open different apps. After that, we took them on a tour of the internet, showing them how to use search engines and locate trustworthy information there. Stressing the value of digital citizenship, responsible online conduct, and safe browsing techniques was essential. We concluded by talking about the internet’s enormous potential, which includes finding new interests and connecting with people all over the world in addition to accessing resources for learning.

LO5: Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively

Although the workshops didn’t go through many official planning phases, the coordinators did give us a curriculum. But the group of student volunteers was essential in making sure it was delivered successfully. With 4-5 volunteers for every 20–25 students in the class, we had to work together well to make the most of everyone’s educational opportunity. Throughout the sessions, teamwork was required for this. We discussed strategies for presenting difficult ideas in an interesting and age-appropriate way, gave new ideas to one another, and kept in close contact to resolve any issues or concerns the students were having.

LO6: Engagement with issues of global significance

Digital literacy is a pressing global issue. By equipping these students with basic ICT skills, I contributed to bridging the digital divide, a significant barrier to educational and economic opportunities in today’s world.

LO7: Recognise and consider the ethics of choices and actions

Throughout the sessions, I emphasized responsible online behavior and navigating the internet ethically. This included discussions on cyberbullying, data privacy, and identifying credible information sources.

This CAS experience proved to be immensely rewarding. Witnessing the students’ enthusiasm as they grasped new concepts and navigated the online world for the first time was truly inspiring. The program served as a valuable reminder of the transformative power of education and the importance of promoting digital inclusion for a brighter future.
