For the service component of my CAS journey, I participated in a community service project where I, along with others, taught dance to students from nearby government schools. This experience was not only an opportunity to give back but also a platform for me to develop as a leader and a collaborator. Teaching dance to children from different backgrounds was both challenging and rewarding, and it gave me a deeper understanding of the impact of education in fostering creativity and self-expression.

Through this service, I fulfilled several CAS learning outcomes, starting with 

LO3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience.

While teaching dance, my group and I had to carefully plan each session. We developed choreographies that were fun, engaging, and suitable for the students’ skill levels. Organizing lessons that kept the students motivated was an important aspect of the project. I also learned how to manage a large group of children, ensuring that everyone was included and had the chance to learn and enjoy the process.

LO5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively was a key outcome of this experience. Teaching dance is inherently a collaborative activity, especially when working with a group of instructors. We had to work together to make sure that our teaching styles aligned and that the children were getting consistent guidance. Communication and cooperation among the teachers were crucial in creating a positive learning environment for the students.

LO6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance.

Through this service, I became more aware of the educational inequalities faced by students in government schools compared to those in private schools. Providing a creative outlet like dance to children who may not have access to extracurricular activities helped me realize how small efforts can make a difference in the lives of others. I saw firsthand the positive effect of our teaching on the students’ confidence and self-expression.

In conclusion, this service experience was not only about teaching dance but also about understanding the importance of Caring and Open-mindedness, which are key aspects of the IB Learner Profile. I had to be patient and flexible in my teaching methods, adapting to the needs of each student. This experience taught me the value of empathy and reinforced my belief in the importance of education and the arts in empowering individuals. It has been a fulfilling journey, one that has shaped me as both a learner and a contributor to my community
