As part of my CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) experience, I embarked on a journey of community service, an opportunity that has shaped not only my understanding of society but also my personal growth. My chosen experience involved volunteering at my school for underprivileged children from government schools and providing them with after-school tutoring and mentorship such as sports, ICT, dance, science, arts and craft, etc. Over several months, I had the chance to contribute in meaningful ways, and this blog captures my reflections on this transformative experience. 

LO3 – Initiate and plan a CAS experience 

I was nervous and excited at the same time when I first arrived for the community service. I wasn’t sure if I had the skills to assist the kids with the activites or how the kids would react to me. My first day, nevertheless, swiftly allayed my worries. The kids were kind and ready to learn. Since many of them originated from underprivileged families, I’ve come to see how important this service is in giving them access to educational support and other activities that they might not otherwise have. As I began playing with them I noticed the vast range of their abilities. Some were quick learners, while others needed more time and attention. This diversity pushed me to adapt my teaching methods to each child’s needs. It was a challenge, but it made me more patient and innovative in my approach. Not everything was smooth sailing, though. There were moments when the children were disengaged or frustrated, and I felt helpless. I realized that while I wanted to make an impact, I couldn’t force anyone to learn if they weren’t in the right mindset. These challenges taught me resilience and the importance of consistency. Even on difficult days, I continued showing up, understanding that building trust and fostering motivation takes time. 

LO6 – Engagement in issues with global significance 

According to me, community service is the closest I can be when it comes to global issues or doing something that holds significance. Helping people in need, engaging children in activities, interacting and providing them various facilities and resources etc. The sustainable development goals I can relate this experience to are 1,3,5 and 10 as volunteering in community service can help reduce poverty by providing essential resources and services to underprivileged communities. Moreover, better healthcare facilities such as providing them with sanitation and sickbay services as well. Involving all children in sports reduces gender inequality which empowers both the genders helping to bridge gender gaps in education, and social standing.

These community services also help us reduce the differences between the rich and the poor. Playing football together made me realize that they are actually more creative and have more potential but because of various obstacles and difficulties such as not having enough resources, access, rights etc they are held back. Community service directly supports the achievement of many SDGs by addressing local needs in areas like education, poverty, health, and environmental sustainability. Through collective volunteer efforts, communities can work together to build a more equitable, sustainable, and resilient society, contributing to global sustainable development goals at the grassroots level. 

LO7 – Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions 

Recognizing and considering the ethics of choices and actions in community service is essential to ensure that the work being done is not only helpful but also respectful, empowering, and aligned with the principles of justice and fairness. Ethical community service requires more than good intentions; it demands thoughtful, informed, and responsible actions. By considering human dignity, autonomy, fairness, sustainability, and cultural sensitivity, those engaged in community work can ensure that their efforts have a positive, respectful, and lasting impact on the communities they serve. Service efforts should address the needs of all individuals, especially marginalized or vulnerable groups, rather than prioritizing certain groups based on convenience, visibility, or personal preferences. Moreover, projects should focus on building capacity within the community, ensuring that improvements can continue after the volunteers leave. It’s unethical to create dependency on external aid or temporary solutions. 

To conclude, the community service experience checks the boxes for creativity, activity and service making it an integral part of global significance. Community service moreover helped me to develop new skills such as communication, time management, collaboration, etc and gave me an opportunity to interact and connect with children eager to learn and explore new things.
