Creative Mela – Garba (Creativity)

Participating in the school Creative Mela was an exhilarating experience, particularly through my role in teaching Garba to students from grades 7 to 10. This vibrant gujarati folk dance, rich in cultural significance, allowed me to engage with younger students in a fun, interactive way. Teaching the steps and rhythms while playing along created an energetic atmosphere filled with laughter and excitement. Watching the students embrace the dance and enjoy themselves was incredibly fulfilling, as it highlighted the importance of cultural expression and community engagement.

LO1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

Teaching Garba allowed me to recognize my strengths in dance and leadership. I found that I have a natural ability to connect with younger students and communicate dance steps effectively. However, I also realized I need to improve my patience and instructional skills when working with large groups, as some students required more time to grasp the movements.

LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills

One of the main challenges was teaching a traditional dance to students who may not have been familiar with it. I had to adapt my teaching style to cater to varying skill levels and ensure everyone felt included. This experience developed my ability to break down complex movements into simpler steps and foster a positive learning environment.

LO3: Initiate and plan a CAS experience

Taking the initiative to organize and lead the Garba sessions at the Creative Mela required planning and coordination. I outlined the structure of the sessions, prepared engaging activities, and ensured that students were enthusiastic and motivated to participate. This experience taught me valuable lessons in event planning and how to create an enjoyable learning experience.

LO5: Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively

While leading the Garba sessions, collaboration was key. I worked alongside fellow teachers and students to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience. By fostering teamwork and communication, we created a supportive environment where students felt encouraged to learn and express themselves through dance. This experience reinforced the importance of collaboration in achieving a common goal.
