Cross-country running is a sport where athletes compete on open-air courses over natural terrain like dirt or grass. As part of my CAS experience, I focused on the Activity strand, utilizing physical exertion to enhance my skills and stamina.
Learning Outcome 2 – Demonstrate That Challenges Have Been Undertaken, Developing New Skills:
Participating in cross-country running was a completely new challenge for me. While I am no stranger to physical activity, particularly in football, running long-distance marathons under challenging conditions was a different test of endurance. Over the course of three marathons (3 km, 5 km, and 5 km), the challenge became more intense, especially given the heat of the day. However, through perseverance, I was able to adapt to the demands of the sport and even secured a place in the top 10 in the inter-house 5 km marathon, which gave me a sense of achievement. Pushing myself to the limits not only improved my stamina but also helped me discover a new area of fitness that I can further develop for future sports activities, particularly football.
Learning Outcome 4 – Show Perseverance and Commitment in CAS Experience:
On the day of the final 5 km marathon, I had a sprain in my right leg and had a choice to make—skip the event or push through to meet my CAS commitment. Despite my pain , I chose to participate, knowing it was crucial to complete the experience. The race was physically demanding, and although energy drinks provided some relief by providing me with an excuse to stop, the exhaustion hit hard toward the end. When I was just 200 meters from the finish line, I began to feel like my legs were gonna fall off and eventually after crossing the finish line I fell to the ground. Despite these physical challenges, I remained determined and completed the marathon, showcasing my resilience and dedication.
Cross-country running was a new and grueling experience that tested both my physical endurance and mental perseverance. Despite the hardships, the activity allowed me to improve my stamina and helped me realize the importance of pushing through obstacles to achieve a goal. This experience has not only enhanced my fitness levels but also strengthened my mindset, proving that commitment and perseverance can lead to personal growth, even in the most physically challenging situations.
Learning Outcome 1 – Identify Own Strengths and Develop Areas for Personal Growth: Through cross-country running, I discovered both strengths and areas needing improvement in myself. My existing athletic background in football gave me a good foundation of physical fitness, which proved to be a strength. However, I realized that long-distance running required a different kind of mental fortitude and pacing strategy that I needed to develop. The experience helped me identify that while I had good sprint capacity from football, my endurance for sustained physical activity needed work. This self-awareness led me to focus on building my stamina and developing better breathing techniques during long runs.
Learning Outcome 3 – Demonstrate How to Initiate and Plan a CAS Experience: To prepare for the cross-country running events, I developed a structured training plan. I started by researching appropriate training schedules for beginners and gradually increased my running distances. I coordinated with my school’s sports department to understand the race routes and conditions. I also planned my nutrition and hydration strategy, ensuring I had energy drinks available during the races. This planning process taught me the importance of preparation in achieving athletic goals.
Learning Outcome 5 – Demonstrate the Skills and Recognize the Benefits of Working Collaboratively: Although cross-country running is largely an individual sport, I found valuable opportunities for collaboration. During training sessions, I worked with other runners to maintain pace and motivation. We shared tips about running techniques and supported each other through challenging stretches. The inter-house marathon particularly highlighted the importance of team spirit, as our individual performances contributed to our house’s overall standing. This collaborative aspect made the experience more enriching and showed how mutual support can enhance individual performance.
Learning Outcome 6 – Demonstrate Engagement with Issues of Global Significance: Through cross-country running, I became more aware of environmental issues and the importance of maintaining natural spaces for outdoor activities. Running on various terrains made me appreciate the need for preserving natural environments and maintaining public spaces for physical activities. This experience connected me to the broader global issues of environmental conservation and public health, as I realized how access to safe, natural spaces for exercise impacts community well-being.
Learning Outcome 7 – Recognize and Consider the Ethics of Choices and Actions: During my cross-country running experience, I faced several ethical decisions. The most significant was choosing to participate in the final 5km race despite my injury. This decision required careful consideration of the balance between commitment to my team and personal safety. While I chose to complete the race, I had to constantly monitor my condition to ensure I wasn’t risking serious injury. This experience taught me about responsible decision-making in sports and the importance of listening to my body while pursuing athletic goals.
