As part of my CAS journey, I recently took part in a 5 km cross country race, an event that challenged me both mentally and physically. This experience gave me the opportunity to reflect on my strengths, work on areas for improvement, and demonstrate perseverance. The marathon was not only a test of my endurance but also an insightful experience into how determination and preparation play vital roles in achieving personal goals.
LO1: Identify Own Strengths and Develop Areas for Growth
Before participating, I recognized that while I had a decent level of stamina, I lacked consistent training for long-distance running. My strength was in short bursts of speed rather than pacing myself for longer distances. During the race, I found that I had the mental focus needed to push through fatigue, which I consider a personal strength. However, I also identified areas for growth, especially in pacing and endurance. This realisation has motivated me to work on improving my fitness through regular jogging and better understanding of pacing strategies.
LO2: Demonstrate That Challenges Have Been Undertaken, Developing New Skills
The cross country race was a new and daunting challenge for me, as I had never run such a long distance in an organised event before. Throughout the race, I developed new skills such as maintaining a steady pace and controlling my breathing to prevent exhaustion. I also learned the importance of hydration during the race. This experience has taught me the value of gradual progress and how pushing myself beyond my comfort zone can lead to personal growth.
LO4: Show Perseverance and Commitment in CAS Experience
Completing the cross country race was not easy. There were moments, especially towards the end, where fatigue set in, and I was tempted to slow down or even stop. However, I remained committed to finishing the race. The mental discipline required to push through the discomfort and stay focused on the finish line demonstrated my perseverance. In the weeks leading up to the event, I also remained committed to training, even when it was challenging to stay consistent.
In conclusion, this cross country race experience has been instrumental in helping me understand my strengths, tackle new challenges, and remain dedicated to my goals. It reinforced the importance of perseverance and commitment, not only in physical tasks but in all areas of life. Through this experience, I’ve gained valuable insights into my capabilities and how I can continue to grow both physically and mentally.
