CAS Blog: Rubik’s Cube Judging and Competition Management
When I first got involved in judging and managing a Rubik’s Cube competition, I had no idea how much effort and coordination went into running such an event. While I have always been fascinated by the puzzle itself, stepping into an organizational role introduced me to a completely different side of the competitive cubing world. This CAS experience pushed me beyond my comfort zone, requiring me to take on new responsibilities, work collaboratively, and stay committed throughout the process.
L2: Demonstrating Challenges Undertaken and Developing New Skills
One of the biggest challenges I faced in this experience was learning how to judge official solves accurately. Competitive cubing is all about precision, where even a small mistake in timing or rule enforcement can affect a participant’s final standing. At first, it was overwhelming to keep up with all the regulations, including ensuring that competitors followed proper scrambling, inspection, and solving procedures. However, through practice and guidance from experienced judges, I gradually became more confident in my ability to judge fairly and efficiently.
Beyond judging, another major challenge was managing the event itself. Coordinating multiple rounds, ensuring smooth transitions between heats, and keeping everything running on schedule required a level of organization I hadn’t dealt with before. I had to develop quick decision-making skills and stay adaptable whenever unexpected issues arose, such as technical difficulties with timers or last-minute schedule changes. These challenges taught me how to remain calm under pressure and find solutions on the spot—skills that I know will be valuable in many other situations.
L1: Identifying Strengths and Areas for Growth
Through this experience, I identified several personal strengths. One of them was my ability to stay focused under pressure. With multiple matches happening simultaneously, the competition environment was fast-paced and sometimes chaotic. However, I was able to stay attentive to my judging duties and avoid distractions, ensuring fair play for all competitors.
At the same time, I recognized areas where I could improve. Time management was one of them. Initially, I found it difficult to balance judging, managing, and helping competitors while also keeping track of my own responsibilities. I realized that I needed to improve my delegation skills—trusting my team to handle certain tasks so I wouldn’t get overwhelmed. In future events, I plan to be more strategic in how I divide responsibilities and manage my time effectively.
L4: Showing Perseverance and Commitment in CAS Experience
There were moments during the competition where things didn’t go as planned. Technical issues, delays, and the pressure of managing multiple tasks at once were mentally exhausting. However, I remained committed to seeing the event through. Even when I felt tired or frustrated, I reminded myself that my role was crucial in ensuring a fair and enjoyable competition for all participants.
My perseverance was especially tested when I had to enforce rules that some competitors found unfair. As a judge, it was my responsibility to ensure that regulations were followed strictly, even when competitors were disappointed with the outcome. Staying firm in my decisions while handling conflicts diplomatically was a challenge, but I knew that fairness and integrity were more important than trying to please everyone.
By the end of the competition, despite the difficulties, I felt a strong sense of accomplishment. Seeing the event run successfully and knowing that my efforts had contributed to its smooth execution made all the hard work worthwhile.
L5: Demonstrating Skills and Benefits of Working Collaboratively
One of the key takeaways from this experience was the importance of teamwork. Running a competition of this scale wasn’t something I could do alone. I had to work closely with fellow judges, organizers, and volunteers to ensure everything ran smoothly. Collaboration was essential in coordinating tasks, solving problems quickly, and supporting each other throughout the event.
I also learned that communication is a major factor in successful teamwork. Clear and efficient communication among the judging panel and event managers helped us avoid confusion and minimize mistakes. Whether it was discussing rule clarifications, updating schedules, or handling competitor concerns, strong teamwork allowed us to manage the competition effectively.
