For my CAS experience, I had the opportunity to volunteer at Hope School, where I and several other volunteers served food to underprivileged children living in a government-provided housing area. The area was designed to offer affordable housing to families with limited income, but the children often lacked motivation for education due to their challenging circumstances. During our time there, we worked alongside volunteers from other schools to teach, play games, and provide food for the children, which was a deeply humbling and impactful experience.

LO6 – Engagement with issues of global significance.

This experience connected with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 2: Zero Hunger and SDG 4: Quality Education). The families in this area often struggled to afford enough food, and many parents worked as drivers, maids, or laborers, earning meager wages. These financial struggles impacted the children, who were demotivated about school and saw work as the only way to contribute to their families. By engaging in food donations and teaching the children, we helped address some of the hardships they faced, contributing to the broader issue of hunger and the need for quality education.

LO7 – Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions.

This experience also made me reflect on the ethical implications of my choices and actions. Coming from a financially stable background, I had never truly understood the struggles that these families faced. I had the privilege of never worrying about food or education, but seeing the children beg for food and hearing their stories made me realize the stark contrast in our lives. It reminded me to never take my privileges for granted and to appreciate the resources I have access to. The experience also sparked a deeper understanding of the importance of helping those in need and how small actions, like food donations, can make a significant impact.
