Farewell Dance

The farewell, an event which holds a lot of meaning and is filled with strong emotions for the senior, and the event that the seniors have been waiting for yet dreading since the start of their DP journey. The farewell, where all the seniors come together and celebrate the memories they have made in their school life, from the struggle to the fun. I was part of the Dance team, which without doubt was the most fun and a lot of work, from the early ins for the practice to the pullouts, it was truly a journey of ups and downs with a chance to gain a new and fun experience. I took up this experience as Activity (A), the dance required a lot of physical commitment and energy to give the best work, each dance practice felt like a good cardio which definitely contributed to my health.

LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills

Learning the dance to all the songs was a challenge, we danced on over 10 songs so remembering the footwork, the body gestures, movements and remembering each and every position and formation of each song got a bit difficult. A few weeks before the farewell we began the preparations of the dance and the learning the choreography led by the team leaders of the dance team, each day was followed with early ins, we’d start our mornings with dance practice and I remember it getting very draining by the end of each session and not to ignore the fact that after the practice session we had a regular school which required equal amounts of energy, it did get a bit difficult but with time we got used to it and learned how to balance both. Having not danced in a while, getting into it again felt very draining and a bit complicated but regardless it helped me gain the skills of a dancer, improved my coordination and helped me in discovering how fun and calming dancing can be.

LO4: Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience

The dance practices required a lot of commitment as there were a lot of songs which needed to be learned in a span of 2 weeks and it wasn’t easy. I was present in every early in and pullouts to ensure that I don’t miss any session of practice, I even ensured to give some time at home since the time at school at many times was sufficient enough. Further, I consider myself to be a committed person, if I start with something, I like to be fully committed to it and give it my 100 percent which was really shown throughout this experience.

LO5: Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively

Many of the dances were pair and group dances meaning working collaboratively was a key skill that was polished and used throughout this experience. The dance TLs being in charge of the choreography of steps were provided with a lot of support and help by dance team as we all collaboratively at many times decided on what steps would like better instead of the ones presented and we made sure to give our inputs because it is necessary to consider that different people bring fresh and different ideas meaning it can be really beneficial to have versatility in the steps. Further, we also collaborated on what songs should be taken for the dances to avoid biases and have fresh choices. Although working collaboratively does come with its disadvantages. Many times, my partners weren’t able to be present at the time of early ins or the pullouts due to certain circumstances which made it difficult for me to learn the dance without my partner as I was unable to get a clear idea of the placements and movements which did get a bit annoying and difficult but I ensured to meet with my respective partners and have a word and get a quick practice to ensure I am clear and so are they.
