Fountainhead School Model United Nations, is one of the most prestigious model united conferences in Surat hosting over 200 high school delegates each year. FSMUN forms communities, uniting delegates from all over India to debate and attempt to resolve some of the most daunting and grave issues from around the world. In the 10th edition of FSMUN I was invited to be the deputy-auctioneer in the IPL committee. This was the newest addition to the conference and one of the most interesting and innovative committees. Through this experience I was able to identify my strengths and weaknesses, be open minded and indulge in intense auction sessions.
LO1 : Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
I had the responsibility of the entire IPL committee over the period of 2 days. I was reliable for all actions and decisions of the committee where I had to ensure the flow of the event and to provide the best possible event for the delegates. I was able to identify that I am good at communicating ideas and thoughts to even a larger group of people and at the same I am able to multitask in the committee wherein I was paying attention to the bids continuously and quickly and making sure to say the right stats as well. However, I noticed that I need to keep my ears open and pay attention to all activities taking place which is where I was lacking. This experience and valuable feedback from others helped me come across this weakness which I can improve upon next time around.
LO2 : Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
It was my first time, chairing a committee in a MUN. In the beginning things seemed messed up and difficult to manage the entire committee. It was difficult to make decisions and be ready for the unknown repercussions. But eventually, I developed new skills of critical thinking which may affect a lot of people, managing on time and skill of multitasking as well.
LO 4 – Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences
Being the deputy-auctioneer was a great deal of commitment and perseverance from me and my partner. We had to conduct multiple training sessions along with school, work on the study guide and player list and at the same stay motivated despite continuous complaints from delegates. Not only that but I was full of commitment to my role by improvising during the committee sessions and despite being exhausted, giving my 100% to make it a fruitful conference. This helped us build our resilience and persistence toward achieving our goals.
LO 5 – Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
Because I was the deputy auctioneer I had to synergize and work with the other chair and collaborate on all the tasks of the committee. We were a great team as we were understanding and we divided the tasks as per our expertise and skills so that we get optimum results. I was able to learn from his skill set and expand my knowledge of IPL and at the same time apply those skills in my tasks as well. My work became much simpler as I had clarity on what work is to be done and as it was divided, not a lot of burden was on me. Also I had to collaborate with the core committee members who helped me a lot by making everything I needed available to me. Collaborating made my work much simpler and effective.
LO 7 – Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
Being the head of my committee, the decisions made by me were crucial and had an impact on the entire committee. I needed to make ethical actions and decisions and make use of wise words during the two day event. I also had to be fair and not make biased decisions towards any delegate and do an honest job while making ethical choices.
Along with the learning outcomes, I personally developed the learning attributes of Thinker, Communicator and Open-minder. Throughout the experience, I showcased communicator attributes as I will have to constantly communicate to the members of the organizing committee, delegates and all other event managers in order to control the committee successfully. I also developed as a thinker because I needed to take critical decisions to urgent problems and creatively think of ideas to make it a memorable conference for the delegates. It also assisted me in developing as an open-minded person as this project included me working with a huge group of people which leads to me respecting different perspectives.
