It was an experience to remember where people set up stalls and explored the world of business in a controlled environment. For the event I had been given the accountant department which managed the flow of cash. Overall, it required a lot of work and quick on feet thinking that made the event a success even while we weren’t getting paid.
LO2 – [Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills]
In this particular experience, I was tasked with managing the accounting for our stall. The event presented unexpected challenges, such as having to deal with multiple pricing policies for different types of customers—friends, regulars, and students of varying grades. This meant that I had to switch between different price points frequently and quickly, which was overwhelming at times.
To address this challenge, I had to think on my feet and develop an entirely new tallying system that would help me keep track of sales accurately and efficiently. This wasn’t something I had prepared for beforehand, but the pressure forced me to adapt quickly. It pushed me to learn how to organize my work under pressure and remain calm when things didn’t go as planned. By having to respond in real-time to the unpredictable nature of the event, I developed better problem-solving skills and improved my ability to work efficiently under pressure.
In this way, the challenge of managing fluctuating prices forced me to stretch beyond my comfort zone and improve both my critical thinking and organizational skills.
LO4 – [Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience]
As the event unfolded, the stall I was responsible for began attracting significant attention, which meant I couldn’t leave my post. While many of the other accountants abandoned their posts to have fun, I remained committed to my role, standing out in the sun for extended periods, ensuring that our stall operated smoothly.
The commitment I showed wasn’t just about being present—it was about staying focused on the task at hand, even when it would have been easy to get distracted. I had set goals for myself to ensure the stall’s operations ran without issues, and I knew that abandoning my post would jeopardize that. This experience helped me understand that true perseverance involves both physical endurance (standing for long hours) and mental resilience (maintaining focus even when others around me were distracted).
This demonstrated my ability to remain steadfast in my responsibilities and keep my focus on the larger goal, ensuring the event’s success despite the distractions and challenges.
LO5 – [Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively]
I was not alone who was working on the accounting, we had a team of 10 to 15 students work together. Working collaboratively made our work much easier as we had different talents and interests amongst us which turned out to be extremely helpful when we worked together.
