During my month-long internship at Learn n Grow, I had the incredible opportunity to work closely with children under the age of 11 who face various mental disabilities, such as autism, ADHD, screen addiction, and slow learning memory. My role included managing daily interactions with the children and creating detailed reports that monitored each child’s progress, similar to the work a therapist might do. This experience was preceded by three months of preparatory learning under the mentorship of the institute’s head, which equipped me with a deeper understanding of psychology and mental health. Throughout the internship, I built meaningful connections with the children, aiming to foster trust and encourage positive progress. The experience was immensely rewarding, allowing me to make a real difference in the lives of these children and further solidifying my passion for child psychology.

LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process.

This internship posed numerous challenges, especially when it came to understanding the unique needs of each child. For instance, adjusting my communication style based on the child’s comfort level or finding creative ways to keep their attention during activities required patience and adaptability. I had to quickly learn how to handle situations where a child would become frustrated or disengaged, which taught me the importance of empathy and active listening. Writing detailed reports that tracked each child’s progress also developed my analytical and observational skills, as I had to accurately document their behavioral patterns and suggest appropriate interventions. Through these challenges, I grew more confident in my ability to work with children with special needs and became more attuned to their individual experiences.

LO4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences.

The internship required a deep commitment to the children’s progress, as building trust with them was a gradual process. Each day, I made sure to show up with patience and a positive attitude, even when faced with setbacks or difficult days. For example, when a child struggled with a particular activity or task, I stayed persistent in encouraging them and finding alternative methods that suited their needs. There were moments when progress seemed slow, but my perseverance paid off as I started to see positive changes in the children’s behavior and engagement. This experience taught me that genuine connections and growth take time, and that consistency is key in working with children who face developmental challenges.

LO6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance.

Through this internship, I engaged with the global issue of mental health, specifically focusing on the needs of children with developmental disorders like autism and ADHD. Understanding how to support children with these conditions is a critical aspect of ensuring inclusive education and care for all. My work contributed to the broader goal of creating a more inclusive environment for children with special needs, offering them the opportunity to learn, grow, and feel understood. The challenges I encountered pushed me to grow personally and professionally, while the successes—no matter how small—brought immense fulfillment. This internship has further solidified my passion for child psychology and my desire to contribute to the field of mental health. The relationships I built with the children and the progress I witnessed reinforced my belief in the power of compassionate care and reminded me of the incredible resilience that lies within each child. It was a privilege to be part of their journey, and I will carry the lessons I learned with me as I continue on my own path.

LO3: Initiate and Plan a CAS experience

My month-long internship at the Learn n Grow Institute was a deeply rewarding experience, where I worked closely with children facing challenges like ADHD, autism, and slow learning disorders. Throughout this period, I was able to identify my strengths, such as patience, empathy, and the ability to build rapport with children, while also recognizing areas for personal growth, like adapting to different communication styles depending on each child’s needs. This experience helped me to develop skills in working with children with mental disabilities, as I learned to create tailored activities that aligned with their developmental needs and tracked their progress through detailed reports.

Planning and organizing my daily tasks during the internship was key to ensuring that I met each child’s unique needs and maintained a structured environment. I had to initiate and plan my sessions, set daily goals, and adapt my approach based on the progress and comfort level of each child. This process required me to be proactive in managing time and resources, ensuring that each session was both productive and enjoyable for the children.

Working collaboratively with the institute’s mentors and other staff members was crucial in achieving positive outcomes for the kids. We shared insights and approaches, which enabled us to refine our methods and provide the best support for the children. This experience showed me the importance of teamwork in a professional setting, and how much could be achieved when working together toward a common goal.

LO7: Recognise and consider the choices of ethics and actions

Throughout the internship, I had to make ethical decisions regarding the care and support of the children, ensuring I maintained a safe and respectful environment for them. Recognizing the importance of confidentiality, respecting their privacy, and handling sensitive information with care demonstrated an awareness of ethical considerations in my actions.
