Pi Day is celebrated every year on March 14th because the date matches the first three digits of Pi (3.14). It is also the birthday of the famous scientist Albert Einstein. This year, students from the Maths and Physics departments shared their knowledge with their classmates and younger students. To make learning fun, my friends and I participated in a group activity where we played math-related games with the audience. Everyone enjoyed these games and tried to challenge themselves as we shared our knowledge and experience.
Learner Profiles Used
During this event, I developed the Communicator and Inquirer learner profiles. Since we worked as a team, we had to listen to each other, share ideas, and divide tasks. Good communication was needed to choose the games, set the rules, and design them. We also had to explain our ideas clearly to our mentors and event coordinators to make the event a success.
As Inquirers, we had to research some Math concepts that we didn’t fully understand. Learning about them helped us explain the games better. We also asked our mentors questions to clarify doubts, especially about the card game rules and permissions. This helped us gain new knowledge and improve our understanding.
LO 5 – Working Collaboratively
Our group had four members, and we were divided into two teams. One team presented card games related to probability, while my partner and I played and explained the Tower of Hanoi game. In this game, Maths was used to calculate the minimum number of moves needed to transfer the tower from one side to the other. Players could also adjust the difficulty by adding or removing disks. We also had to think carefully about which disk to move and when.
Before the final event, we came to school early to research the games, learn the concepts, and prepare materials like chart papers. On the event day, we decorated our table, welcomed participants, and guided them through the games. This event was only possible because of teamwork. With everyone’s efforts, along with the support of our mentors and friends, we made it a success.
LO1 – Identifying Strengths and Areas for Growth
This CAS experience helped me recognize my strengths and reflect on them. I was never really interested in Mathematics and didn’t plan to take part in this event. However, stepping out of my comfort zone and helping organize a full day for Pi Day was a big surprise for me. Through this experience, I also improved in many ways. I learned about new games like Tower of Hanoi, Speed, and Black Jack, which we also introduced to others during the event.
LO3 – initiate and plan a CAS experience
Before 14th march we all spend days coming to school for early ins showing commitment in order to research on ideas, and finalize the activities and games we are going to put at our work station. After deciding we spent hours and hours of working on the project and games by making a few of our own, creating charts and learning more about the relation of mathematics also having many failures however the whole time I was with my peers and because of it all the challenges and tasks became fun and we finally executed the plan successfully where everyone enjoyed.
