Personal Sport – Activity

I have always had a great interest in the sport of Basketball, and even started playing a few years ago. This interest is the reason why I enrolled myself in the holistic development programme at our school that offered daily basketball practice. Basketball has given me the medium to ease off after hard days at school where i can unwind with friends and enjoy myself. It has also allowed me to improve my health, where in a predominantly sedentary lifestyle basketball has helped me improve my athleticism.

LO1 IDENTIFY THEIR OWN STRENGTHS AND DEVELOP AREAS FOR PERSONAL GROWTH

Like any sport, basketball needed constant practice and improvement. I had to assess all parts of my game to see where I lacked and had to improve. For example, playing the “center” position, I identified that I was comfortable with scoring near the basketball, although needed practice in mid range shots. Assessing my strengths also tremendously helped me where through assessing and identifying moves that I knew well and was confident in, I ensured that I played them the most in matches to score the most.

LO2 DEMONSTRATE THAT THEY HAVE UNDERTAKEN CHALLENGES, DEVELOPING SKILLS IN THE PROCESS

I faced a lot of adversities and problems when I first started playing basketball. Playing the center means that I  have a lot of physical contact with players. I had to push myself to develop skills that forced the players to get out of physical contact so that I could make plays in other ways. This included working on my agility, ball handling and explosiveness. Improving on these turned out to be quite difficult at first although going to the gym, practicing special drills that focus on skills and playing games tournaments frequently helped me overcome them.

LO4 SHOW PERSEVERANCE AND COMMITMENT IN A CAS EXPERIENCE

Improving in any sport requires copious amounts of commitment and perseverance where I had to devote myself completely in the sport. Showing up for practices daily regardless of setbacks such as inquiries, losses and self doubt. Overcoming these and showing up to play everyday whether it be structured coached practices, casual games in school or meeting to play on the local team I showed perseverance  beyond the physical challenge i had to adopt a mental determination of resilience.
