Pi Day is an annual celebration and is celebrated every year in each part of the world. It is celebrated on the 14th of March as it shares with the first 3 digits of Pi which are 3,1 and 4. Additionally , 14th March is also celebrated as the birthday of the great scientist , Albert Einstein. This year , the students of Maths and Physics shared their subject’s knowledge with their classmates and the younger ones. To share our knowledge of Maths , I and my friends took part as a group in playing games related to Maths. The audience enjoyed playing the games and attempted to compete with themselves as we shared our expertise and experience.
Learner Profiles which I had used:
I applied the learner profiles of Communicators and Inquirer. As we participated as a group , we tried to listen as a group. Each person had his own role and a freedom to share his own idea. We were using our communication skills in selecting the games , making the rules for the games and designing the game. Additionally , we needed to communicate our ideas with our mentors and as well as the event leaders/coordinators. As this was a big event , communication skills were required to make this event successful. Inquirers were needed as we didn’t know some Mathematics concepts and needed to be researched. We tried to learn about them and then applied them in our presentations. We also needed to ask some questions to our mentors to clear our understanding. As we were presenting a card game , there were some rules and permissions needed. Inquirer as a learner profile helped us clear the doubts and helped us improve our knowledge and understanding
Learning Outcome 2 – Demonstrate that Challenges have been Undertaken, Developing New Skills in the Process :
I had taken part in many activities , events and projects but participating in a Maths event was different. I had never taken part in a Math event so I didn’t know what to do but I tried to take on a challenge and develop a new skill. The main challenge was to find games related to Maths and trying to find different Math concepts behind the game. Then , the next challenge was to find out how we would design the game or present it. By solving each problem and working as a group we tried and developed new skills.
Learning Outcome 5 – Demonstrate Skills and Benefits of Working Collaboratively :
Our group consisted of 4 people including myself. We divided into 2 activities where one pair would present several card games related to probability , while we played and presented the game called ‘Tower of Hanoi’. We used Maths in finding out the minimum steps a person could take to move the tower from one side to the other. Each player could choose the difficulty by increasing or decreasing the number of disks. We also applied Maths in knowing which disk to be moved where and when. Before the final day , we came to the school early as we did the research for the games and the concept behind it and also did some paperwork (chart paper). On the final day we completed our decorations for the table and then as a group we greeted and invited people to play our games. This work wouldn’t have been possible without the whole group and we , as a whole group with the help of our mentors and friends made this event successful.
Learning Outcome 6 – Demonstrate Engagement with Issues of Global Significance :
This day is celebrated worldwide and holds a huge global significance. Additionally this event is celebrated every year in our school. Every year , I see this event happening in our school and try to participate as a guest but this year because our Grade was organizing the event , I decided to volunteer in it with the help of my friends. Moreover , Maths as a subject is not celebrated as much as the other subjects so to change myself by trying something new , I went on to volunteer for this event. This event helps us to share the knowledge of Maths in a fun way with the teachers and students of younger grades. This event also helped me to understand the importance of Pi as a unit and as well as about the subject , Mathematics.
