Early mornings in December and January found me at school before the bell, scaling the rock wall by itadakimasu. This wasn’t just a physical challenge, it pushed me beyond my comfort zone. Rock climbing turned out to be an amazing experience, and I learned a lot about the sport.
Rock climbing wasn’t just physical exercise; it became a journey of self-discovery. Reaching the top at least once in four tries showed me my body’s potential and fueled my motivation to get stronger. I learned valuable lessons about grip strength and exercises to improve it. Waking up early and keeping track of sessions honed my self-management skills.
The sport itself earned my respect. The unique blend of strength and problem-solving required is unlike anything else offered at school. Staying calm and strategizing your moves are crucial to success. While climbing itself is solo, the supportive presence of peers and guides fostered a sense of teamwork.
LO1 – Identify own strengths and areas of growth –Rock climbing wasn’t just about the climb itself; it was a chance to assess my physical strengths. This helped me pinpoint areas for improvement. Akhil sir’s feedback provided even more insight, highlighting specific areas where I could grow.
LO2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, Developing new skills – Rock climbing was completely new territory for me, requiring both early mornings and a leap out of my comfort zone. It proved to be a challenging but rewarding experience, equipping me with new skills in rock climbing, improved strength, and greater self-awareness.
LO4 – Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience – Rock climbing initially felt intimidating. Repeatedly falling short of the top took a toll on my confidence, leading to moments of discouragement. However, I demonstrated perseverance and commitment by pushing through these feelings and continuing to attend sessions. This wasn’t easy, especially when faced with potential judgment or a lack of motivation from others.
LO3 – Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience – The early morning rock climbing sessions required careful planning and initiative. I coordinated with Akhil sir for training times, maintained my own schedule to arrive before the bell, and developed a systematic approach to tracking my progress. I also took initiative in researching grip strength exercises to supplement my climbing practice.LO5 – Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively – Though rock climbing is an individual sport, the experience taught me valuable collaborative skills. Working with spotters, sharing technique tips with peers, and learning from more experienced climbers created a supportive community. We celebrated each other’s achievements and offered encouragement during challenging moments, showing how individual growth can be enhanced through collective support.
LO6 – Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance – Through rock climbing, I gained awareness of environmental conservation issues related to outdoor climbing and the importance of responsible sport practices. Understanding the impact of climate change on natural climbing locations and the need for sustainable climbing practices connected my personal experience to broader global environmental concerns.
LO7 – Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions – Safety protocols and ethical climbing practices were fundamental to this experience. I learned the importance of honest self-assessment when deciding which routes to attempt, responsible use of equipment, and the ethics of supporting fellow climbers. This experience taught me how personal choices in sport can reflect broader ethical principles of responsibility and respect.
