Rock climbing, also known as sports climbing is a sport which requires immense amount of body strength, the ability to carry your weight and flexibility. These are some of the aspects I consider myself to lack in and wanted to work on. These were 4, 1 hour sessions spread across 1 month. We came early to school, jogged for 5 minutes, did some basic warm-up exercises to ensure our muscles are nicely warmed up to avoid muscle pull or any other issue. After warming up, we put on harnesses and got climbing. This was an incredible experience for me as I found a lost passion of mine, I used to sport climb during 6th and 7th grade as a part of my personal sport activity but with time, the passion was lost but now that I got the chance to experience sports climbing again, I was excited to know that I still was passionate about this and would love to do endless sessions.
LO1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
As mentioned, i considered myself very good at sports climbing when I used to pursue it in previous grades so I knew getting back into this won’t be much of trouble. And it wasn’t, I found myself to be able to reach the top every time but I had lost my speed. So every session was a goal for me to have faster speed every time and to work on that I ensured to give myself that push that I needed. I shared my goal with the facilitator available there and he gave me tips to work of the speed aspect and every time I went again, I could see improvement. There were two different courses we had to perform, one was with incline and one was flat. The flat one went very smooth for me every time and I could improvement there but in the second course with the incline, I was not able to get past the fourth block due to wrong placements. I had done that course previously but doing it on that day, it felt impossible. But with the help of the facilitator, I was able to get past the fourth block and up to the 7 block. Although I couldn’t make it any further, I was happy that i was able to get over the 3 block.
LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills
A big challenge I faced during the courses was the issue of flexibility. I don’t consider myself as a flexible person and can’t do the splits. This sport required maximum flexibility to yield faster climbing so I had to put in a lot of work which was very challenging. The warm ups that we did in the beginning definitely seemed to help as everytime it hurt less to stretch. Although, I haven’t achieved the masters of doing splits, I definitely think I have gotten better at it through this.
