We went on a trip to the quiet area near Kada Dam in Jambughoda. It was a special trip where we stayed in 2 campsites in a rural village for 6 days to learn and grow. Our goal was simple: we wanted to learn about rural life, experience it firsthand, and learn by doing things ourselves. We were excited to explore, learn about different cultures, and develop new skills during this trip and we catered all aspects of CAS, Creativity, Activity, as well as Service, within this experience.
LO1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
Throughout the rural immersion trip, I had numerous opportunities to reflect on my personal strengths and areas where I could grow. One standout moment was when we decided to build a zipline. Working together with my classmates and under the guidance of our faculty, we faced challenges as we tackled knots and ropes. Despite setbacks, we persevered, showcasing our resilience and teamwork. This hands-on experience not only highlighted our collective strengths but also shed light on areas where we could improve. Personally, I realized the significance of adaptability and collaboration in problem-solving, deepening my understanding of myself and my capabilities.
LO2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills
In our journey, we encountered various challenges that pushed us to develop new skills. One such challenge arose during our basket-making session. Tasked with crafting traditional baskets, we found ourselves grappling with the intricacies of weaving and shaping raw materials. Initially daunting, the process tested our patience and perseverance as we navigated through setbacks and frustrations. However, through collaborative efforts and a shared determination, we gradually honed our skills, witnessing the transformation of raw materials into functional baskets. This experience not only fostered a sense of accomplishment but also instilled in me a newfound appreciation for persistence and the rewards of venturing beyond one’s comfort zone. It was a testament to our resilience and adaptability in the face of challenges, showcasing our ability to thrive and grow through hands-on experiences.
LO4 – Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience
During our time with local school kids, we showed perseverance and commitment. Even though we spoke different languages, we worked hard to communicate and understand each other. We talked, played games, and shared stories, building a strong bond despite our differences. This showed how dedication and sticking with something, even when it’s challenging, can create meaningful connections and friendships. It taught me the importance of putting in effort and staying committed to building relationships and learning from others, no matter the obstacles we face.
LO6 – Engagement with Issues of Global Significance:
During our rural immersion trip, we actively engaged with issues of global significance by immersing ourselves in the local community and understanding their challenges. From visiting the local market to interacting with farmers and artisans, we gained firsthand insights into issues like sustainable agriculture, economic disparities, and environmental conservation. Additionally, our conversations with nature experts and a visit to a local hospital to learn about the spread of sickle cell anemia in the area deepened our understanding of health disparities and genetic diseases. By witnessing the interconnectedness of these issues with global trends, we developed a deeper appreciation for our role as global citizens and the importance of taking action to address such challenges on a broader scale.
LO7 – Recognize and Consider the Ethics of Choices and Actions:
Throughout our journey, we were constantly reminded of the ethical implications of our choices and actions. Whether it was respecting the local customs and traditions, ensuring fair trade practices during market interactions, or being mindful of our ecological footprint, ethical considerations were woven into every aspect of our experience. Our visits to nature experts and the local hospital to understand sickle cell anemia highlighted the importance of ethical research practices and the need to approach sensitive topics with sensitivity and respect for local communities. Through reflective discussions and guided reflections, we learned to critically evaluate the consequences of our decisions and the importance of making ethical choices that uphold integrity, fairness, and respect for all individuals and the environment. This emphasis on ethical awareness has empowered us to become more conscientious and responsible global citizens in our future endeavors.
Skills Developed:–
Communicator: During interactions with local school children, despite language barriers, we found creative ways to communicate, such as using gestures and simple words. For instance, when playing games with the children, we used hand signals and smiles to convey instructions, fostering an environment of understanding and cooperation.
Risk-taker: Building the zipline was a prime example of us taking risks and stepping out of our comfort zones. Despite the initial rope breakage, we didn’t give up. Instead, we adapted our approach, changed the location, and successfully completed the zipline. This experience taught us the importance of embracing challenges and being willing to try new things, even if they seem daunting at first.
Thinker: During the basket-making session, we had to carefully plan and strategize to overcome challenges. For example, when weaving the baskets, we had to think critically about the placement of each strand to ensure a sturdy structure. This activity encouraged us to think creatively and problem-solve effectively, showcasing our ability to approach tasks with a thoughtful and analytical mindset.
Conclusion
In summary, our rural immersion trip was a transformative experience that taught us valuable lessons in teamwork, resilience, and personal growth. Through hands-on activities and interactions with local communities, we gained new skills and insights into ourselves. As we reflect on our journey, we’re grateful for the bonds we formed and the challenges we overcame.
