Day 1: The Adventure Begins
Our much-anticipated trip to Kada Dam in Jambughoda began with a bus ride filled with excitement and laughter. After a quick breakfast along the way, we reached our destination, settled into our rooms, and immediately started having a blast. The bus ride itself was a precursor to the fun that awaited us.
Our first stop was a visit to a nearby village, where we were struck by the serene patience and calm demeanor of the villagers. The farmers, despite facing numerous challenges, greeted us with warm smiles and an optimistic outlook on life. Their resilience was truly inspiring—they emphasized that good things take time and are achieved through consistency, discipline, and practice.
During this visit, I identified a strength in my ability to empathize with the villagers’ situations (Learning Outcome 1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth). Recognizing this strength made me feel more connected to the people we were meeting. However, I also noticed a weakness in my lack of patience when faced with unfamiliar challenges. Understanding this has made me realize the importance of working on patience, as it would benefit me in situations where immediate results are not possible.
Back at the campsite, we embarked on a thrilling night trek to the dam. The darkness of the jungle was both eerie and fascinating, as we learned about wildlife conservation and the importance of respecting nature. This trek was particularly challenging as it required us to navigate unfamiliar terrain in the dark (Learning Outcome 2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process). Although it was intimidating, I discovered that I could remain calm and focused in challenging situations, a skill that I believe will be useful in the future.
The night ended with a cozy dinner, followed by quality time with our teachers and friends. Sharing ghost stories around the campfire was one of the most thrilling moments of the trip. We then retreated to our dorms, where the fun continued until we finally drifted off to sleep.
Day 2: Exploring New Horizons
The second day began with an early morning bird-watching session, followed by a visit to another village. We interacted with APMC authorities at the local hospital, where we learned about the impact of sickle cell disease on the community. This experience brought to light the global issue of healthcare access in rural areas and its implications (Learning Outcome 6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance). Understanding this issue made me more aware of the disparities in healthcare and the importance of supporting efforts to address them.
Later, we tried our hand at pottery, which was both fun and educational. This activity required a level of commitment and perseverance as we learned the delicate art of shaping clay (Learning Outcome 4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences). Despite the initial difficulty, the sense of accomplishment after successfully creating a pot was incredibly rewarding.
That evening, we gathered to prepare our own dinner, bonding over the shared experience of cooking and enjoying the fruits of our labor together. Working collaboratively with my peers in the kitchen emphasized the importance of teamwork (Learning Outcome 5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively). It wasn’t always easy, especially when opinions clashed, but we learned to communicate and work together effectively, which is a crucial skill for any group activity.
Day 3: Connecting with the Community
On the third day, we visited a local school and spent time with the children, playing games and dancing to their favorite tunes. It was heartwarming to see their joy, and we felt a deep sense of fulfillment in contributing to their happiness. This experience taught us about the different types of games and dances they enjoy, and we left feeling more connected to the local culture.
The interactions with the children also highlighted the importance of ethics in our actions (Learning Outcome 7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions). Ensuring that our presence was positive and respectful was essential, and it made me more conscious of how our actions can impact others.
Afterward, we visited the village market, did some shopping, and explored the nearby cowshed (gavshala). Each interaction deepened our understanding of rural life and the challenges the villagers face daily.
Day 4: Immersing in Rural Life
Day four was all about getting our hands dirty—literally. We learned how to plow, sow, water, and harvest crops, gaining firsthand experience of the hard work that goes into farming. This was an eye-opening experience that made me appreciate the labor-intensive nature of farming (Learning Outcome 2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process). Despite the physical challenge, the satisfaction of contributing to the process was immense.
We also visited the local Sakhi Mandali and an oil factory, where we observed small-scale production processes. Basket making and school painting were other highlights of the day. Organizing and initiating these activities required careful planning and coordination, especially given the time constraints and unfamiliar environment (Learning Outcome 3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience). This experience reinforced the importance of planning and the need for flexibility when things don’t go as expected.
Our interactions revealed the economic struggles that drive people to migrate to urban areas. Despite the lack of advanced technology, the impact of modern conveniences like electricity was evident in their lives. The day ended with a visit to the headmaster of the village school, where we left our mark with some colorful paintings.
Day 5: An Adventure in Nature
The fifth day took us on a breathtaking trek through various terrains, including mountains, forests, and caves. Holding snakes and learning about them from our guide was an exhilarating experience. This challenged my comfort zone, but also taught me the importance of understanding and respecting wildlife (Learning Outcome 2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process). On our way back, we tried our hand at cotton picking—a simple yet satisfying activity.
The night sky on this particular evening was a rare treat. With no city lights or pollution to obscure our view, we were lucky enough to witness a stunning display of shooting stars. It was a magical moment that we’ll cherish forever.
Day 6: A Grand Finale
Our final day at the campsite was packed with adventure. We tried zip-lining and the flying fox, both of which we helped set up, adding to the sense of accomplishment (Learning Outcome 5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively). The highlight of the day, however, was an unexpected visit to a site where wild tigers were held in cages. These tigers, known to have hunted humans, were now being contained to prevent further incidents. As we boarded the bus for the last ride home, we reflected on the incredible journey we had just completed. The free time we had each day allowed us to bond with our friends over games like footvolley, volleyball, and kho-kho, or simply chat and laugh together. Sneaking in other restricted treats against our vigilant teacher incharges only added to the fun and thrill.
The daily routine of sharing ghost stories around the campfire at night, after musical nights, created memories that will last a lifetime. School trips like this are truly some of the most memorable parts of our lives, all these days accompanied by our friends unexpectedly made this trip in such a basic setting, one of the best times of our lives. This trip to Kada Dam wasn’t just an excursion—it was an experience that taught us valuable life lessons, deepened our friendships, and left us with great stories to tell for years to come.
