During my CAS experience, I chose to build skills in the sport of badminton. I participated in the HDP PS offering of Badminton, which took place in my school from 23rd June 2023 to 27th October 2023. My primary goal was to transition from being a beginner to an intermediate player and, ultimately, to enhance my overall physical fitness and skills in this particular sport.
Throughout this CAS experience, I diligently identified my strengths and weaknesses in badminton. I recognized that I had a natural aptitude for power in my shots but struggled with agility and endurance during drills and practice games. Understanding these strengths and weaknesses was enlightening. Knowing my strengths allowed me to leverage them to my advantage while acknowledging my weaknesses was the first step towards improvement. Understanding our strengths and weaknesses is essential as it helps us set realistic goals and develop strategies for growth. I committed to working on my weaknesses, especially my agility and endurance, which, if improved, would significantly benefit my overall performance on the court.
Participating in badminton presented several challenges. The most significant challenge was the transition from a beginner to an intermediate player. I had limited prior experience in badminton, so understanding the nuances of the game was daunting. Additionally, maintaining consistency in attending the sessions and honing my skills was challenging due to academic commitments. Overcoming these challenges required dedication and hard work. I learned that embracing challenges is crucial for personal growth. By taking on this challenge, I not only improved my badminton skills but also developed a strong work ethic. I hadn’t encountered a similar challenge before, so this experience was a unique opportunity to develop my skills in badminton and adapt to the demands of balancing sports with academics. The skills I acquired through this experience, such as improved forehand service and a better understanding of the game, can be immensely useful in the future. These skills have boosted my confidence, and I now feel more capable and competent on the badminton court.
Commitment and perseverance were necessary for this activity, especially when I faced challenges. The commitment to attend regular practice sessions, the perseverance to push through when skills wavered, and the determination to participate in the ISSO selections and trials were all demanding aspects of this experience. I have always been someone who values commitment, and this activity reaffirmed that belief. It is not always easy to commit and be persistent, but these qualities are vital for success in any endeavour. In this CAS experience, showing perseverance and commitment was crucial for my growth as a badminton player.
This experience taught me that by respecting my coaches, fellow players, and opponents, I could create a positive and empathetic atmosphere on the court. It’s essential to treat everyone with respect, whether we win or lose. This experience encouraged me to inquire deeply into the game of badminton. I sought knowledge and insights from coaches and more experienced players to understand the game better and improve my skills. This CAS experience demanded creative problem-solving and critical thinking to overcome challenges in the game and in balancing academics with sports. Ethical issues in sports, such as fair play and sportsmanship, taught me the importance of being principled and following ethical standards, even when facing competitive situations. This experience provided a supportive environment to take risks and push my physical and intellectual limits. It showed that taking risks is a crucial part of growth and learning.
In this CAS experience, I developed the learner profile attributes of Balance and Reflective. To become a balanced athlete, I had to work on my physical fitness, including upper-body strength, lower-body flexibility, and agility. This experience also emphasised the importance of balancing academics and sports in my life. Being reflective about my performance helped me track my progress and identify areas for improvement. While my CAS experience in badminton didn’t directly connect to my academic subjects, it enriched my overall development. It taught me the value of hard work and persistence, and how these attributes are essential for success in any endeavour. My commitment to this sport also had a positive impact on my physical well-being. I felt fitter, more agile, and had a higher level of endurance by the end of this experience. The highlight of this journey was reaching the quarter-finals in the ISSO selections and trials. Although I was eliminated, this achievement boosted my confidence and fueled my passion for badminton. This experience challenged me both physically and mentally, and it altered my perspective on sports. It highlighted the importance of physical fitness and how it can positively affect overall well-being. This CAS experience also allowed me to understand the value of sports in promoting the Sustainable Development Goal of “Good Health and Well-being.” Being physically active not only enhances individual health but also contributes to the well-being of the community. I consider this experience a success because it instilled a sense of accomplishment and enjoyment in me. It made me realise that through commitment, hard work, and perseverance, I can achieve my goals. As I move forward, I plan to apply the lessons learned in this experience in various aspects of my life, including academics and other activities. I also aspire to contribute to the community by promoting the importance of physical fitness and sports.
