In September 2023, I joined a two-day trekking adventure in Igatpuri, Maharashtra, which was both challenging and fulfilling. We trekked across steep mountain paths and took in the stunning natural scenery, offering a refreshing escape from the busyness of city life. Beyond the trek itself, we engaged in activities that connected us with the local environment and community. We helped clean nearby dams and visited a local school, where we spent time with students to understand more about their way of life.
LO1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for personal growth
The steep mountain paths and rugged terrain demanded physical strength and mental determination. Despite the challenge, I was determined to complete each section of the trek, even when it became tiring. Pushing myself to continue climbing and reach each checkpoint reminded me of the importance of commitment, especially in challenging situations. This experience taught me that perseverance is essential, whether in trekking or in life; often, it’s the effort we put in that brings the most rewarding results. Reaching the end of the trek with my team was a moment of accomplishment, symbolizing the value of dedication.
LO2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
Beyond the trek, we participated in activities that brought us closer to the community and environment. Cleaning a nearby dam emphasized the importance of environmental care, showing me that even small actions contribute to preserving natural spaces. Visiting a local school and interacting with the students was equally impactful, giving me a glimpse into their daily lives and unique perspectives. Through these experiences, I grew more aware of environmental responsibility and the importance of community involvement. These insights strengthened my sense of social awareness, making the entire trip more enriching.
LO3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience
Planning was essential for the trek itself, as the rugged terrain demanded a strategy to conserve energy and maintain a steady pace. Before the trek began, I ensured I was equipped with the necessary gear, hydration, and snacks to sustain myself throughout the journey. Collaborating with the group, we organized checkpoints to regroup and motivate one another, which was crucial for keeping everyone on track and focused. For the environmental and community service activities, prior initiative played a significant role in their success. Cleaning the nearby dams required us to divide tasks efficiently, ensuring the activity was thorough and completed in the limited time available. Similarly, visiting the local school involved planning interactive ways to engage with the students, making our time with them both meaningful and impactful.
