2 Day Trekking Trip to Igatpuri(A, S)

LO 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7

In September, I participated in a two-day trek to Igatpuri, Maharashtra, an experience that allowed me to challenge myself both physically and mentally. My goals were to push my personal limits, develop leadership and teamwork skills, engage with the environment and local communities, and gain a better understanding of global issues. This trip turned out to be a holistic experience that contributed significantly to my personal growth and reflection.

LO1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

Throughout the trek, I realized that my physical form was one of my strong points, which helped me keep pace during the challenging ascents. However, one of the challenges I faced was communication with my peers. Being new to the school and unfamiliar with the team’s dynamics and culture, I initially found it difficult to effectively engage with others during the trek. This created some hesitation in coordinating group activities or expressing ideas. Over time, I recognized the importance of clear and open communication, which helped me better connect with the group.

LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills

The trek itself presented numerous challenges, especially navigating steep and uneven terrain. Physically, it pushed my endurance to new levels, and I had to develop quick decision-making skills to ensure my safety and that of the group. Working with my peers to maintain group cohesion required effective communication, especially when the trail became difficult. Cleaning the nearby dams also posed a challenge, as we had to develop problem-solving skills to figure out how to gather waste from hard-to-reach places. These experiences helped me develop both physically and mentally, enhancing my teamwork and adaptability in unfamiliar situations.

LO4: Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience

Perseverance was crucial during the trek, particularly when exhaustion started to set in. The long stretches of uphill trekking were tough, and there were moments when shortcuts seemed tempting. However, I remained committed to completing the trek fully. Additionally, the unpredictable weather and slippery rocks added another layer of difficulty. Despite these challenges, I stayed focused and pushed forward.

LO5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively

Teamwork was essential throughout this experience. During the trek, it was important to communicate and coordinate with the group, ensuring that no one fell behind or was left alone. In the dam cleaning project, we had to split tasks to efficiently collect and dispose of waste. I also worked closely with my peers at the local school, where we interacted with the students and organized activities for them. This collaboration helped me recognize the value of teamwork in achieving common goals and reminded me of the importance of listening to and respecting others’ opinions, especially when disagreements arose.

LO6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance

The visit to the local school and the dam cleanup highlighted global issues such as environmental sustainability and educational inequality. The school lacked resources, which made me think about the broader issue of unequal access to education. By engaging with these students, I understood the importance of education in empowering communities and addressing inequality. Cleaning the dams reinforced the need to protect natural resources.

LO7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions

During the dam cleanup, I reflected on the importance of individual responsibility in environmental conservation. Every piece of litter removed was a step toward preserving the local ecosystem, reinforcing the idea that our actions can have lasting impacts on nature. At the school, we made sure to approach the students with respect and empathy, engaging with them in a way that was culturally sensitive and meaningful.

In conclusion, the two-day trek in Igatpuri was a transformative experience that tested my physical endurance, mental resilience, and capacity for teamwork. I came away with new skills and a deeper appreciation for the environment and local communities. From pushing through the challenges of the trek to engaging with students and cleaning up the local dam, this experience contributed significantly to my personal growth and broadened my perspective on global and ethical issues.
