Duration : 5th August to 20th August (at weekends)
Service is an integral component of our lives, whether on a local, national, or worldwide basis. As a child, I admired my grandfather for giving back to the community, especially to the less fortunate and needy. CAS provided me with the chance to deliver service through a learning engagement.
Community service is an event in which Fountainhead School students provide service to underprivileged children. Students are required to provide service to the community by offering a variety of services. This was a teaching event in which students chose sports that the children would enjoy and taught them on weekends. Schools in Surat’s outskirts are contacted in order to provide Fountainhead school personnel and students with alternate learning opportunities and extracurricular activities on weekends. Every weekend, kids join us for three hours: 1.5 hours on Saturday and 1.5 hours on Sunday. The service I participated in involved teaching children about the technology, teaching kids how to operate a computer, and going through basic applications offered by google like google searches, google docs, spreadsheets, and more. The children studied in government schools, and didn’t have enough resources or opportunities to explore the world of Information Technology.
Community service made me realize how privileged I am and this event also helped me change me daily routine, waking up early through
During Community service I demonstrated several learning outcomes Which include :
LO 1 : Identify strength and weakness
During Community Service event, I communicated with children to teach them basics of operating a computer, This activity helped me identify my strength and weakness, being a IB student I have been using a chromebook for over six year, while that’s the case I have been learning to operate a computer since I was 7 , and also I have taken interest and participated in multiple IT events, which make me feel confident in knowing a device I have spent so much time with, on the other hand I have always had stage fright, and I have a introverted personality, which makes it hard for me to talk to new people, or to a crowd, during this event I tried to overcome my shyness, and give learning to the children, as they showed enthusiasm as I did when I started learning about computer. To further overcome my shyness, I have been trying to be more participative, and take part in projects where I can stand in front of a crowd and speak without fumbling.
LO 3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience
During the Community service event, my colleagues and I formulated activities and took advice from IT experts to ponder significant knowledge on children. We started working by first going through the basics, teaching the basics of a computer, how to operate it and use it efficiently. There were difficulties during execution of the plan, as the children weren’t able to catch up to our instructions and teaching speed. After the first and second day, we slowed down the pace of our teaching to a level, which can help them get adequate knowledge. This experience has helped me a lot, as it has helped me take a stand, going forward I will be able to use the things children taught me, while I was teaching them to definitely control my stage fright.
LO 4 : Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences
It’s never been easy for me to commit to things, I have always had trouble holding onto a new thing I start, but during this event and with the help of children, I showed perseverance and pondered a significant amount of knowledge about IT sector to children. Many commitments were required like not sleeping in on a weekend, showing up with a happy face no matter what, and always being in a good mood around children, to be a good mentor for children, I showcased commitment.
LO 6 : Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
SDG 4 Quality Education emphasizes the importance of education across the world. This experience helped me grasp the relevance of the goal and how to strive towards it. Through this event, we shared our expertise in several areas with unprivileged children. Following the seminar, I had a greater grasp of the SDGs, which allowed me to demonstrate my commitment to the fourth sustainable development target.
The community service experience has been excellent. This experience has taught me a lot of new things that will come in handy later in life. Throughout this experience, I covered a wide range of learning objectives, which helped me have a better grasp of how to write CAS blogs in future. This experience was a success for me since I played an important role as a mentor to the underprivileged youngsters and became their close friend.
