Bal Mela

Bal Mela is an event hosted by our school where around 2000 students from underprivileged schools are invited to take part in various fun activities. This year’s event featured arts and crafts, dance, games, and sports. I volunteered in the games team, where we made small children play different team games. Helping facilitate their learning and seeing the joy on their faces brought me a deep sense of fulfillment.

LO1. Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

My strength lies in communication, since all of the kids were from underprivileged schools, they only communicated in native languages like Gujarati and Hindi. Since my mother tongue is Gujarati it was easy for me to communicate and bond with those kids. Additionally, my past experiences in community service allowed me to build a quick rapport with the children. Having worked with underprivileged kids before, I was able to communicate effectively with them, making them feel comfortable and involved. However, one area I realized I could improve on is patience. Some children were young so they required more assistance to understand the games. Moreover, we played games which we already played or leaned so this was my strength and guiding them through the games and rules was quite convenient for me.

LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
One challenge I faced during the event was managing a large group of young children who had varying levels of understanding of the games. Some children were more energetic and required more attention than others, while others struggled with grasping the rules of the games. To overcome this challenge, I had to develop better time management and multitasking skills to ensure that every child felt included and enjoyed the activity. Additionally, I learned to adapt my communication style to suit the needs of different age groups, which helped me manage the situation more effectively. These new skills helped me grow as a facilitator and ensured that the games were fun for all the participants.

LO3: Initiate and plan a CAS experience
Although the Bal Mela event was pre-planned by the school, I took the initiative to plan the logistics for the games section. This involved deciding which games to play, setting up the equipment, and ensuring the children understood the rules. I also collaborated with my team to strategize how we would manage the large number of participants and make the event run smoothly. By being proactive and planning ahead, I helped ensure that the games section was well-organized, which contributed to the overall success of the event.

LO4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences
Throughout the Bal Mela event, I showed commitment by being fully engaged in my role as a volunteer. Despite the long hours and the physical demands of managing energetic children, I remained dedicated to making sure each child had a positive experience. There were moments when the children became restless, but I persevered and continued to keep them engaged and entertained. My commitment to the event was also evident in my preparation beforehand, where I practiced explaining the games and organized the necessary materials. This perseverance allowed me to create a meaningful experience for the children, even in the face of challenges.

LO5. Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively

This task would not have been possible without collaborate working with my friends. We were able to successfully able to bounce off ideas and improvise when kids came for activities. For example, since the number of children participating was higher than expected, we split into pairs and handled separate groups simultaneously. This decision helped us manage the activity better and allowed for more personalized attention to each child. However, with us working in different areas, communication became more challenging. To overcome this, we developed a simple system using gestures and signals, which kept the children focused and allowed us to coordinate efficiently. This collaborative approach not only made the experience more enjoyable but also highlighted the importance of teamwork in overcoming challenges and ensuring the activity’s success. Working together allowed us to handle the event smoothly, and I gained valuable insight into how effective collaboration can enhance both the process and the outcomes of such projects.
