Engaging in meaningful Creativity, Activity, and Service (CAS) experiences has been a crucial part of my personal growth and development during my time in school. One such impactful experience has been my weekly volunteering at the local animal shelter, which has allowed me to address global issues, develop essential life skills, and deepen my ethical understanding.
LO4 – Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience
Over the course of my weekends spent at the animal shelter, I have demonstrated perseverance and commitment in my CAS experience. Feeding the animals, preparing their food, and cleaning their living spaces have been physically demanding tasks, but I have consistently shown up and completed them to the best of my ability. This regular involvement and active engagement have allowed me to contribute meaningfully to the shelter’s operations and make a tangible difference in the lives of the animals in need.
LO6 – Engagement with issues of global significance
Volunteering at the animal shelter has opened my eyes to the global issue of animal welfare. Sadly, the challenges faced by the shelter in my community, such as overcrowding and funding issues, are mirrored in shelters around the world. Seeing the animals in need of care and attention has deepened my understanding of this significant global problem and has motivated me to take action, even on a local level, to support animal welfare and address this worldwide concern.
LO7 – Recognise and consider the ethics of choices and actions
Through my work at the animal shelter, I have learned to recognize and consider the ethical implications of my choices and actions. When preparing food or handling the animals, I had to prioritize their dietary and safety needs over my own desires, such as skipping steps to finish tasks faster. This experience has strengthened my understanding of the ethical responsibility we have to treat all living beings, including animals, with care and compassion. It has also helped me develop the essential skill of principled decision-making, which I will carry with me long after I leave school.
Conclusion
My weekly volunteering at the animal shelter has been a transformative CAS experience, allowing me to develop invaluable qualities such as perseverance, global citizenship, and ethical decision-making. By addressing a significant worldwide issue, facing challenging tasks, and prioritizing the wellbeing of the animals, I have grown as an individual and gained a deeper understanding of my role in creating a more just and compassionate world. This experience has been a true testament to the power of CAS in shaping well-rounded, principled individuals.
