My recent rural immersion trip to Sankheda village was a truly enriching experience that pushed me out of my comfort zone and allowed me to engage with important global issues in a meaningful way. Over the course of our stay, we were graciously welcomed into the local community and had the opportunity to live and interact closely with the villagers, gaining firsthand insights into their daily lives and challenges.
Learning Outcome 2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
The rural immersion trip provided numerous challenges quite different from my usual lifestyle and environment. Staying in very basic accommodation with just a small room and one fan was an adjustment from what I was used to. I also found the simple village meals took some getting used to. However, being exposed to such different living conditions pushed me well outside my comfort zone. Through facing these challenges, I believe I have gained important life skills like adaptability and appreciation for what I do have access to in my daily life.
Learning Outcome 5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
One aspect that stood out was how welcoming the villagers were in inviting us into their lives, despite their own struggles. Their willingness to collaborate by answering our questions highlighted the value of coming together across differences. Witnessing collaboration firsthand through small acts like sharing meals emphasized its power to bridge gaps and foster understanding between communities.
Learning Outcome 6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
Interacting directly with the village community was a true eye-opener. Visiting family homes, the local school and farms gave fascinating insights into rural realities. Playing with the village children in particular showed their resilience and joy despite lacking amenities I take for granted. Witnessing everyday life in Sankheda fostered a deeper understanding for issues of global significance, like barriers faced in accessing education and livelihood opportunities in rural areas. Discussing what we observed with peers further consolidated our shared learnings.
Overall, this immersive rural experience was profoundly impactful. While I found aspects personally difficult, I feel I gained greater empathy, awareness and skills from facing challenges outside my norms. Most importantly, I feel a stronger connection to issues of sustainability globally and locally that I will continue engaging with beyond this CAS experience.
