For my CAS project, I launched a programming and design club within my school, providing students with the opportunity to explore the intersection of these interdisciplinary fields and develop valuable skills in both areas. The club offered engaging activities, workshops, and projects aimed at fostering creativity and collaboration among participants, while also providing a platform for them to showcase their talents and ideas.
Incorporating games and activities into the programming and design club’s activity was an effective method to make learning more engaging and accessible to students with varying skill levels and interests. Students learned foundational programming concepts in a fun and intuitive manner by utilizing interactive and hands-on methods such as game-based learning and practical activities. Through these experiences, they not only improved their technical skills, but also gained a better understanding of the broader applications and implications of programming in various fields. They were able learn basics of python during their period and the basics of web designing to move on with entanglement of design and programming.
LO1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
Students were able to identify their strengths and areas for development in both technical and soft skills. By participating in hands-on projects and activities, they were able to gain insight into their abilities and interests, allowing them to tailor their learning experiences to their specific goals and aspirations.
LO2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills
The club provided students with a variety of challenges and opportunities to learn new skills in programming, design, problem solving, and collaboration. Whether it’s working on complex coding projects or collaborating on creative design tasks, participants will be encouraged to push themselves and broaden their skill sets in a supportive and nurturing environment. One such example is when we participated together with the members in a codewars competition, it got more competitive through which the application of critical thinking skills increased, hence resulting in honing and development of new skills.
LO3 – Initiate and plan a CAS experience
As the organizer of the programming and design club, I took on the responsibility of initiating and planning the experience from start to finish. This involved coordinating with school administration, recruiting participants, scheduling activities, and overseeing the execution of club events. By taking on a leadership role in the planning process, I have developed valuable organizational, communication, and project management skills and lastly time management skills as I had managed and used effective time scheduling to provide enough time for clubs during school hours while managing other classes.
LO5 – Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively
Collaboration will be a key component of the programming and design club, as students work together to brainstorm ideas, solve problems, and work on innovative projects. Through collaborative activities and group projects, participants were able to learn the importance of teamwork, communication, and compromise, while also gaining a deeper appreciation for the value of diverse perspectives and skill sets in both field designing and programming
