Community Service

This was an in-school activity where we taught kids many skills and sports. These kids came from underprivileged backgrounds, some from government schools and others from NGOs. Specifically, I taught Frisbee to students, this experience was a bit challenging but it helped me in my personal growth.

LO1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
While teaching kids frisbee, I looked at myself and understood that I had a lot of weaknesses that I should improve. I was handling a team of about 15 – 20 people and it showed me that I lacked leadership skills and communication skills, that I should improve. Through community service, I worked on it and eventually, I got better with my team and mixed along with the kids. Whereas I was not only teaching the kids, but I was also teaching my peers to frisbee and this was the main strength, of how I shared my skills.

LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
Throughout the whole community service over a month. I undertook a lot of challenges and tried to resolve them. The main challenge was the language barrier, I did not know fluent Gujarati, and explaining to the kids got very hard, there were moments when I was not able to explain what I wanted the kids to do in the first session. But after a while, in the next weeks, I tried speaking Gujarati and also tried sign language to communicate with them.

LO4:Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences
From 5th to 20th August we had 6 sessions, and I was committed in all of these sessions to teach kids Frisbee to the best of my ability. I genuinely wanted to see improvement in these kids as they were playing well despite their age.

LO 6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
These kids came from underprivileged background, and most of them had basic literacy. Poverty in India is a big issue, with over 26 crore living Below the poverty line. I wanted to contribute to the growth of these kids in any way possible as it would help in solving a very crucial issue of poverty.
