28th Dec to 31st Jan (once a cycle)
Rock climbing as a CAS experience had been challenging while also helping me develop new skills because it was the sport I was unfamiliar to. We had to attend 4 sessions in the early morning. Our session started with warm up such as jogging for 5 minutes and a few stretching exercises. Rock climbing as a sport requires physical capability, tough in your mind, and good at using the right techniques to climb difficult paths and go higher. In the first session, I was very nervous to attempt it as I have not done rock climbing since childhood. I tried but I was not able to complete the whole route till touching the wall. Everyone had their different goals while completing these 4 sessions of rock climbing. My goal was to learn new skills and be able to touch the top of the wall after the last session.
After these 4 sessions of rock climbing, I developed many new skills such as how a warm up should be done before any sports activity and how harnesses are worn for safety, at what spots we can get grips, which route is better to climb the wall, and etc. In each session, they kept creating it hard to achieve my goal. For the first two sessions, we were climbing on the same wall which I was able to complete till the top of the wall in my third or second sessions whereas they all gave us a challenge to climb an inclined wall which was getting hard to climb as I tried to reach the end point but, in the last session I too close to touch the wall but, I failed to reach it. But still I was happy that I tried to complete them and tried my best.
LO 5 : “demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaborativelyâ€
While climbing, some of them faced difficulties climbing it. As I have fear from heights, I was sometimes nervous and forgot the path to reach till the end but, my friends cheered me up, whereas we also worked in a group and collaborated with each other to help that person to reach the top point by guiding them the way. Working as a group gave benefits to the people who are new towards rock climbing as students who have already done it before and are good at it, helped them with their skills to achieve others goals.
LO 2 : “Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skillsâ€
As I don’t have habit to wake up at early morning, sessions in early ins were the most challenging for me because I needed wake up at 6 am, it create difficulties for me and it also disturbed my sleeping cycle and to adapt that, it took me a whole cycle. I even missed a few sessions because of this challenge but I tried to cope with it and overcome my challenge and completed the four sessions of rock climbing. This CAS experience challenged me to push myself beyond my comfort zone and learn a new skill.
LO 1 : “Identify own strengths and develop areas for growthâ€
This CAS experience was an opportunity for my personal development as it motivated me to give equal focus on my physical health and well-being. My weakness is that I get bored easily when I try to improve my well-being and physical health, but learning this new skill helps me overcome that weakness and it also helps me to create equal focus on my health.
LO 4 : “Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experienceâ€
In the first two sessions, I was not able to achieve my goal which demotivated me everyday that I wouldn’t be able to learn a new skill and achieve my goal till the end but, I still didn’t gave up and tried my best to achieve my goal try to ignore the comments given by other students. I even followed the feedback given by the teachers and managed to achieve my goal and developed a new skill.
In the end of this CAS experience, I was able to develop a new skill with the usage of the learner profile balance because I tried to balance my health and well-being by these sessions and it also motivated me to balance it in the future also. This activity benefited others as they also got to learn something new whereas it also helped the coaches to interact with students to give them lessons. The highlight for this experience for me was gaining something new and getting active to balance our physical health. These four sessions were a success for me because in the final session, I was able to achieve my goal and it makes me feel happy and more encouraged to attempt one more activity where I can learn another new skill. This activity brought a sense of enjoyment in me after completing it and during those sessions. If I get an opportunity to attempt this experience again, I would like to change my goal as I have already achieved this goal, this time I would keep it more difficult than before. These skills developed in this experience can help me in future as if I ever get a chance to climb the mountain, the techniques used in rock climbing can be used here.
