Community Service is a program organized by our school where underprivileged students come from various schools around FS. They come to visit our school on weekends, spend some time with us and learn a lot of new skills by participating in various activities such as sports, dance, art and craft, science projects and ICT.

I was a volunteer for dance and every week we used to teach the dance on new songs. To start the session with energy and excitement, we first started with making the children do zumba and fun exercise on bollywood songs just to boost their energy. On the first weekend we made them dance on the song “raat bhar”. The first weekend went a little unplanned and chaotic. This was because of the miscommunication between the volunteers and also because all the volunteers were not aware of the dance. But later on to make sure the sessions further go smooth we all tried to learn the steps beforehand sometimes so that the confusions decrease. Furthermore, all the children that came were very sweet and were always enthusiastic to learn the new dance. They never got tired.

LO4 – Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences
Commitment was really required for this CAS experience for showing up every weekend to school early in the mornings. It was also very difficult to handle the CAS timings with other classes and simultaneously preparing for SATs. It was definitely not easy to attend these sessions throughout 3 weeks. However, I understood that time needs to be divided equally and I have to spend some time on these sessions as well. What kept me going and motivated were the joyful and excited faces of children before every session. This way I was committed to my task and completed the community service session by showing perseverance.

LO5 – Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
I demonstrated social skills and communication skills with my team members throughout the event while deciding the steps and while settling and adjusting children in a row. My social and communication skills helped me collaborate with my group members. There are a lot of benefits of working collaboratively. It makes the task simpler and when the tasks are divided the efficiency also increases.

LO7 – Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
We made sure that we used appropriate songs with appropriate wordings that would not cause any harm to the children. Moreover, we also planned simple and child friendly dance steps so that every child percent there could dance. We were also very respectful towards the children and did not shout or get angry on them.
