FSMUN

Participating in FSMUN 10.0 as a member of the Organizing Committee (OC) decor team was a challenging yet rewarding experience. The event is an annual Model United Nations conference where students represent different countries to discuss global issues, and it was our job to ensure that the event looked vibrant and professional. As part of the decor team, my role involved planning, designing, and setting up decorations that created a welcoming atmosphere for all delegates and guests.

LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills

Working on the decor team came with its fair share of challenges. One of the biggest challenges was time management—we had limited time to set up the decorations before the event started each day. We had to work quickly, ensuring that everything was in place without compromising the quality of our work. Additionally, we faced challenges in terms of coming up with creative ideas that fit the MUN theme while staying within the budget. These challenges pushed me to develop new skills such as time management, creative problem-solving, and improvisation. For example, when we ran out of certain materials, we had to think on our feet and adapt to use what was available, which taught me to be resourceful.

LO3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience

My experience in the decor team required a lot of planning and organization. From the initial brainstorming sessions to executing our ideas, the entire process involved careful planning. We first identified the themes for each room and created a list of materials needed for decorations. I helped plan the layout for the main conference hall, ensuring that the space looked both formal and engaging. This experience taught me how to create a plan from scratch, manage resources, and coordinate with other team members to ensure everything came together smoothly. By having a clear plan, we were able to execute our vision effectively, making the event look organized and well-thought-out.

LO4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences

Being a part of the OC decor team required a high level of commitment. The days leading up to the event were filled with late-night meetings, hours of cutting and pasting posters, and endless discussions about how to improve the event’s aesthetics. There were moments when I felt exhausted, but I stayed committed to the task because I knew how important it was for the overall atmosphere of FSMUN. Even on the day of the event, I made sure to stay alert and available in case any last-minute adjustments were needed. This experience taught me that perseverance is key to achieving our goals, and the satisfaction of seeing the beautifully decorated venue made all the effort worthwhile.

LO5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively

Collaboration was crucial in making sure everything went smoothly in the decor team. We had to divide tasks among team members, such as setting up the entrance area, preparing banners, and arranging decorations inside the committee rooms. Effective communication played a big role in ensuring that everyone was on the same page, and we constantly exchanged ideas to improve the decor. When issues arose—like how to position a large banner or deciding on colour schemes—we worked together to find solutions. This experience helped me recognize the importance of listening to others’ ideas, being open to suggestions, and appreciating the efforts of each team member. Working together made the whole process faster and more enjoyable.

Being part of FSMUN 10.0’s OC decor team was a truly enriching experience. It allowed me to apply my creativity, work on my time management, and learn the value of teamwork. Seeing the final outcome—a beautifully decorated venue buzzing with excited participants—was extremely fulfilling. I walked away with new skills, great memories, and a deeper appreciation for the hard work that goes into organizing large-scale events. It was a reminder that with the right planning, commitment, and teamwork, even the most challenging tasks can be accomplished successfully.
