This semester, our school hosted the much-awaited Garba Fest, a vibrant celebration of Indian culture, bringing together students from all walks of life to immerse themselves in the rich tradition of Garba dancing. The event was not only a fun-filled evening but also an enriching experience that helped us connect with our community, engage in teamwork, and reflect on cultural diversity. Here’s how the event aligned with the IBDP CAS learning outcomes:

Throughout the process, I learned how to communicate effectively and motivate peers, especially those who were unsure of themselves. Despite initial difficulties, we eventually pulled together, with some students even learning the dance routines in just a few hours, highlighting how much we can achieve when we take on challenges and support one another.

The planning and execution of the Garba Fest required careful consideration of multiple aspects to ensure its success. I took the initiative to help coordinate the dance practice sessions, working closely with experienced dancers to create a schedule that accommodated everyone’s availability. We started by identifying the basic steps that needed to be taught and developed a progressive learning approach – beginning with simple movements and gradually introducing more complex choreography. This systematic planning was crucial as many participants were new to Garba. I also contributed to creating detailed practice plans, breaking down each session into warm-ups, technique practice, and full dance routines. To ensure smooth execution, we maintained a shared document tracking our progress and areas needing more attention. This experience taught me the importance of thorough planning and how to adapt those plans based on participant feedback and progress. The success of the event demonstrated that effective planning, combined with flexibility to adjust as needed, is essential for bringing a vision to life.

The perseverance we showed in the weeks leading up to the event paid off as the night unfolded beautifully, and it was incredibly fulfilling to see everything come together. The effort we put into practicing the dances, the collective enthusiasm, and the joy shared by everyone at the festival made it clear that perseverance truly makes a difference.

The Garba Fest was a perfect example of teamwork in action. Whether it was the dance groups, the organizers, or the volunteers, everyone had a role to play in ensuring the event’s success. Working with students from different backgrounds, with varying levels of experience in Garba, helped me see how effective communication and mutual respect can create an environment where everyone feels valued. We had to constantly adapt our plans and support each other, ensuring that no one was left behind. By the end of the night, we had not only achieved our collective goal of celebrating Garba but had also built lasting friendships and trust among team members.

The Garba Fest was an unforgettable experience that allowed us to demonstrate the core principles of CAS. It pushed us to grow as individuals and as a community, and gave us a platform to engage in meaningful cultural exchange. The event reminded us that even in a diverse school, we can find common ground through shared activities, and by challenging ourselves and working together, we can achieve extraordinary things. Whether it was learning a new dance, working with classmates, or exploring a new culture, the Garba Fest gave us the opportunity to develop skills, create lasting memories, and understand the importance of celebrating diversity.
