Global Odyssey – Service

Global odyssey is a very happening event which is held and organized by students of Business Management and Economics. Because of the huge strength of both the batches, it is a very grand event with elaborate event planning. There are many categories which students can select for setting up stalls such as Food, Games, Fashion, Photo Booth etc. Apart from that there were many teams such as the decor team, logistics team etc. I was a part of the decor team.

LO1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

Decor team was a huge one, this is because the event was very huge and all the decor had to be on theme and unique and we had to cover a lot of area for the decor. There were multiple photo booths and decoration pieces. I realized that I was quick at making things and also coordinating with instructions, this made me realize that I had good group management skills and could also work well with the leaders. However, one thing I realized about myself was that I was not able to rely on people easily, I was always scared and insecure about the fact that they would mess up the decorations or the painting which I designed, for instance lettering on the boards which I had done had to be painted, so I decided to also take up the responsibility of painting them because I was scared that someone would mess it up. This is an area of growth I need to work on, which is trusting in others during group tasks.

LO2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills

As this was a grand event, there were many components to it, most of the decorations were to be done during the BM slots when we had to pull out and other decorations were to be done on the day before the event. This created a little bit of chaos because there were instances, that some decor pieces were misplaced and others were still in the making. The decor was not only of the venues but also of the stalls which also took up a lot of time and space. Basically there was just a lot of work to be done in a short amount of time. We decided to tackle this issue by distributing responsibilities to different people and also calling for early ins that increased our time by an hour to start decorating. We also formed a type of chain system, where new decorations were made by some people of the decor team and they would pass it to the people who were decorating, so the whole process became much more efficient.

LO3 – Initiate and plan a CAS experience

Abundant amount of time was given to everyone for the whole event, the majority of the BM slots were used in this so we needed a fruitful outcome. This gave us a lot of time to explore creative ideas for the decor team, we took help of pinterest as our theme was pretty specific, the theme was pink and red relating to cherry blossom. We together planned many decorations that would go together, making and assembling all the decor took a lot of planning which was done collaboratively between the decor members.

To conclude, the global odyssey event was a success with great teamwork and new ideas. It gave a lot of experience to how to work for big events and also gave me good realization about myself and how I work with others.
