HDP PS

Throughout my first year in the Diploma Programme, I dedicated myself to the school football team as the goalkeeper. Having always enjoyed the pressure and problem-solving aspect of this unique position, it proved the perfect CAS activity for me to develop both physically and personally.

Coming into my role, I identified that shot-stopping was one of my biggest strengths (Learning Outcome 1). However, I wanted to become more confident distributing the ball with my hands and feet. Over numerous practices and matches, I stretched my skills by practicing kicks and throws to teammates (Learning Outcome 2). It was difficult to break old habits at first, but pushing my boundaries expanded my capabilities between the posts.

Making a commitment to attend every team session and game demonstrated my perseverance over the long-term (Learning Outcome 4). As goalkeeper, I knew my consistent presence was vital for building understanding with my defenders. There were many tiring days, but my dedication paid off as we improved as a defensive unit.

One of the most important lessons I learned was how to effectively communicate and collaborate, particularly with the backline protecting my goal (Learning Outcome 5). Through active listening and clear direction during matches, I helped optimize our organization and decision-making as a united barrier against opposing strikers.

Overall, having football as a CAS activity supplied the optimal setting for me to enhance my skills and character. I not only strengthened technically as a goalkeeper but developed long-lasting strengths in terms of resilience, teamwork and personal development that will benefit me far beyond secondary school.
