Rural Immersion

“On Earth there is no heaven, but there are pieces of it.” And I reckon those pieces are in rural areas. My most recent Rural Immersion Trip was a deep exploration of the heartlands of sincerity and simplicity, leaving the hustle and bustle of the city behind. It was an event that would change my life. 

LO1 – Identify your own strengths and develop areas for growth.

I was able to pinpoint a lot of my strengths and shortcomings during this trip and create goals to address the latter. When some of my closest friends did not accompany me during the vacation, I realized that I was a highly friendly person and had made a significant number of new friends.. I also realized that I was keen to attempt new things and had no fear of obstacles like rappelling. But when we went on a walk, I realized that I needed to improve my fitness and stamina because I was becoming fatigued quite easily.I also realized that I needed to improve my communication abilities because we found it difficult to interact socially and converse with the children when we went to play with them at the local government school. 

LO2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills.

I was involved in working at bamboo factories.This was a special difficulty because I had to become used to new tasks and work settings. I was in charge of carrying finished bamboo goods and moving heavy bamboo. There were unique problems associated with this task. I had to quickly become used to the physical demands of lifting and carrying huge bamboo things, which called both strength and careful preparation. I became skilled at handling large bamboo objects safely as a result of doing this. I was able to understand the importance of each stage in the bamboo production chain through this experience, which also helped me improve my general skill set—especially my physical strength.

LO5 – Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively.

We were all able to contribute to the loading and unloading of heavy bamboo items with ease because of our effective coordination and collaboration. Working together, we not only sped up the procedure but also made sure that everyone was safe. In farming, too, cooperation allowed us to cover a larger area more quickly. When it came to painting public schools, all of our combined efforts made the walls transform more quickly and creatively. Our combined skills and efforts not only accelerated tasks but also improved the overall experience.

LO6 – Engagement with issues of global significance.

The experience of helping in bamboo factories, farming, and painting public schools allowed me to witness firsthand the challenges and opportunities present in rural communities. Playing with the children of the public school not only fostered a sense of joy but also highlighted the universal importance of education and the resilience of young minds. The dinner in an unknown villager’s house illuminated the significance of cultural exchange and hospitality, emphasizing the shared human experience across diverse backgrounds. Engaging in a volleyball match with villagers transcended language barriers, reinforcing the universal language of sports and communal spirit. Conversations with the sarpanch and other villagers unveiled the interconnectedness of local issues with broader global themes, such as sustainable development and community well-being. Performing a skit for the children provided a creative platform to address social issues and foster awareness

LO7 – Recognise and consider the ethics of choices and actions.

Playing with the children and performing a skit aimed at bringing joy while respecting cultural sensitivities, ensuring our actions were both entertaining and ethical. The dinner in an unknown villager’s house underscored the importance of cultural respect and appreciation, fostering a reciprocal exchange that was both heartwarming and ethical. Conversations with the sarpanch and villagers revealed the ethical considerations inherent in community development and the importance of inclusive decision-making. 

To recapitulate, this trip was something that I never knew I needed. This trip taught me that happiness can be found in small things. But in our highly advanced world, everyone is busy chasing materialistic things and are forgetting the real pursuit of life which is the pursuit of happiness.
