HDP PS (Basketball)

This semester in my HDP PS class, I decided to try playing basketball for my activity. Basketball was a new sport for me I had never played in a team setting before, and I was interested in developing new skills while staying active. This experience helped me to identify some of my strengths and areas for growth.

While I am not the fastest or most coordinated player, I found that I have good ball-handling skills and can pass well. Being able to notice openings on the court and make accurate passes to teammates is something I felt I was good at. However, dribbling at high speeds while being defended and shooting layups consistently proved more difficult for me initially. Through practice and coaching from our instructor Mr. Desai, I saw improvements in my ball control and shooting ability over time. This challenged me to learn new techniques and showed how I can develop my skills through perseverance.

Initially, to help plan my experience, I spoke to Mr. Desai about specific drills or exercises I could focus on as a beginner. He helped me prepare for each session by giving me small goals to work on, like dribbling with my non-dominant hand. Having these objectives in mind allowed me to participate and progress at my own pace actively.

Playing on a team was very different than anything I had tried before in a sports setting. At the start, it was difficult to communicate and work together effectively as we were all still learning. However, as the weeks went on I noticed our team developing stronger court awareness and becoming more coordinated through passing plays we had been practicing. While we did not always win our scrimmages, I was proud of our team’s improvement through collaboration and supporting each other’s growth.

The most challenging aspect for me was having to push myself outside of my comfort zone. By the end of the semester, my stamina and ball skills had greatly increased thanks to regularly committing to practices and games. I learned that I am capable of learning new skills and trying new challenges if I am determined and open-minded. This experience has helped me recognize the benefits of persevering even when something is difficult at first.

In the future, I hope to continue nurturing my cooperation and teamwork abilities in this class. These are skills I believe will serve me well no matter what path I choose after finishing school. Playing basketball has been an enlightening experience that increased my self-awareness and work ethic. I am grateful to Mr. Desai for coaching and supporting my development in this activity.
LO1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for personal growth “Starting basketball as a complete beginner in HDP PS class allowed me to honestly assess my athletic abilities. I discovered that while I had good hand-eye coordination, which helped with dribbling, my shooting accuracy and understanding of game strategies needed significant improvement. This self-awareness helped me identify specific areas to focus on during practice. I also recognized my natural enthusiasm for learning new sports, which helped me maintain a positive attitude despite the initial challenges. Through this experience, I became more aware of both my physical capabilities and areas where I needed to develop.”

LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills “Taking up basketball presented multiple challenges as I had never played team sports before. I had to learn fundamental skills from scratch – dribbling, shooting, passing, and understanding game rules and strategies. Each practice session pushed me to develop new abilities, from mastering the proper shooting form to learning how to move effectively on the court. The transition from individual practice to team gameplay was particularly challenging but rewarding, as it required me to develop split-second decision-making skills and spatial awareness. These challenges helped me grow not just as an athlete but also in my ability to learn and adapt to new situations.”

LO4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences “Despite the initial difficulties and occasional frustration of being a beginner, I maintained regular attendance at practice sessions throughout the semester. Even when I struggled with certain skills or felt discouraged by my slow progress, I remained committed to improving. I spent extra time practicing shooting techniques and ball handling outside of class hours. This perseverance was essential in seeing gradual improvement in my game skills. The experience taught me that consistent effort and dedication are crucial for developing any new skill.”

LO5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively “Basketball, being a team sport, provided numerous opportunities to work collaboratively with my classmates. I learned to communicate effectively on the court, coordinate with teammates during plays, and support others who were also learning. Working together during practice drills and games helped me understand the importance of trust and cooperation in team settings. I appreciated how more experienced players helped guide beginners like me, and in turn, I began helping others who were struggling with skills I had managed to develop. This collaborative environment enhanced not just my basketball skills but also my ability to work effectively in a team.”
