HDP PS – Football

This academic year, I decided to take HDP PS as my CAS activity. I have been playing football recreationally with friends for a few years, but wanted to learn new skills and techniques in a more structured setting. The classes were held 3-4 times a week for an hour during school.

LO1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth This activity helped me meet several CAS learning outcomes. By putting myself out of my comfort zone and joining an organized training environment, I was able to identify my strengths and weaknesses on the field. My dribbling and passing skills were more developed than others, such as shooting with my weaker foot. Noticing my areas for improvement allows me to focus on developing a well-rounded game.

LO2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills HDP PS presented many new challenges for me. My coach taught tactics and skills that I had never tried before, like techniques for beating defenders one-on-one. At first these felt overwhelming, but through practice and perseverance over the year I gained proficiency with maneuvers that expanded my abilities on the pitch. I had to challenge myself to learn outside of my typical playing style. I also came 3rd in the interhouse where I played all the games.

LO4 – Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience In terms of commitment, I made sure to attend every training session even when I had other homework or activities. I saw improvements in my stamina and skills over the long term by sticking with the program. There were times that I found practice repetitive or tiring, but pushing through those challenges helped strengthen my dedication to improving.

LO7 – Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions There were also lessons to be learned about teamwork and ethics. During scrimmages we had to consider fair play and respecting referees’ decisions, even when we disagreed. I tried my best to be a supportive teammate and put the group’s success over individual accomplishments or stats. Going through this experience has made me more aware of maintaining integrity both on and off the pitch.

Overall, participating in the HDP PS this year helped develop my abilities and deepen my passion for the sport. The understanding and lessons gained will stay with me beyond secondary school. I’m grateful for the opportunity to challenging myself through this CAS activity.
