Over the past few years, I have been really fascinated by the world of economics. I used to research and study about economics and current affairs in my free time. This makes me interested in building my career in economics itself. But this is a big decision to be taken. That is why I wanted to ensure that I gain some work experience in this field to understand what a career in this field would look like.

That is when I signed up for an internship with SUPROS in economics and policy making. The internship was conducted by Nikita Jain, an expert in policy making, who was working with Niti Ayog in India. I did this internship from 11 July to 5 August where I learned about basic fundamentals of economics and its implications in policy making.

LO1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
During this internship I got to know that I am able to understand economic conditions concepts very easily, which turns out to be my strength. This would help me understand economics better in future. However, one area of growth I understood was the use of language and terminology. While working in the internship, my supervisor noted and provided me feedback to use more economic terms, instead of lamen terms for effective communication.

LO2- Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
One of the challenges was to come up with solutions. Over the years, I have learnt about several economics concepts, issues and the solutions the governments had implementated but now, I had to apply this knowledge to actually solve an economic problem as a policy maker of a country. So here, I developed problem solving skills to come up with solutions.

LO 5- Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
We were divided into groups where we had to work together in the internship such as creating a policy paper. During this, all of us also had different and contradicting opinions which we discussed in detail and came to a common ground. Also since all of us had different strengths, like I was good in research, someone was good in the technical stuff etc., we divided our work accordingly to come up with quality work.

LO 6- Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
During our internship, we explored global economic challenges such as recovering economy from covid pandemic and we had come up with a policy paper to recover this recession in the tourism sector. So we were using our economics understanding to come up with solutions for a significant global issue.

LO 7- Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
Also while creating the policy paper, we had to consider several ethical concerns such as not underpaying the local people in this sector or to not damage the environment or to ensure safety of consumers.
