My passion for mathematics, event planning, and teamwork has shaped many of my experiences, and this one was no exception. I’ve always loved math—something about solving problems and finding patterns just excites me—and I enjoy sharing that enthusiasm with others. On top of that, I have a knack for organizing events and making sure everything runs smoothly, which fits perfectly with my love for structure and coordination.

When I chose to take on this CAS experience, I saw it as the perfect opportunity to combine my two interests: math and event planning, while also exploring my creativity. Organizing and hosting the Math Trivia Event for Grade 9 and 10 students felt like a natural fit. It allowed me to dive into something I’m passionate about while giving back to my peers by encouraging them to engage with math in a fun and challenging way. At the same time, it pushed me to grow in areas like teamwork, leadership, and organization. My goal was simple—to create an event that was both educational and enjoyable, and in doing so, I knew I’d develop my skills and take on new challenges.

LO1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

Right from the start, we took stock of each other’s strengths to make sure we were assigning the right roles. It was clear that each of us had something unique to offer—whether it was creativity, attention to detail, or problem-solving. My friend and I felt confident in our public speaking abilities, so we decided to be the event’s hosts. We knew we could keep the energy up and engage the audience throughout the competition. Meanwhile, other team members excelled in organizing, researching, and structuring the trivia rounds, ensuring that the questions were both challenging and enjoyable. We also recognized where we needed improvement—things like time management and technical know-how—and supported each other in those areas. This experience really helped me understand my strengths but also highlighted areas I can continue to grow in.

LO3 –  Initiate and plan a CAS experience

Planning the Math Trivia Finals was quite the journey, with multiple stages and plenty of brainstorming. We wanted to design rounds that would not only get students excited but also test their knowledge in a fun way. After finalizing the structure, we focused on crafting a mix of thought-provoking and varied questions. As the event approached, we shifted our attention to the logistics—making sure the resources were in place for contestants, troubleshooting technical issues, and dealing with time management. On the day of the finals, despite the inevitable challenges, we pulled off the event smoothly and adapted on the fly to any unexpected hurdles.

LO4 – Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience

Juggling the responsibilities of organizing the event with our academic workload was tough. There were many late nights and weekends dedicated to making sure everything was ready, and we often had to sacrifice personal time to ensure the event was a success. When we ran into issues—like last-minute changes or technical glitches—we didn’t let them derail us. We stayed committed, came up with quick fixes, and kept our focus on delivering a great experience for our classmates. This perseverance really underscored my determination to see this project through, even when things got difficult.

LO5 –Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively

The success of the Math Trivia Finals was largely due to how well we worked together as a team. Everyone brought their unique skills and strengths to the table, whether it was in creative thinking, attention to detail, or keeping everything organized. By dividing roles and staying in constant communication, we made sure that tasks were completed efficiently and on time. This collaboration not only made the event a success but also created a strong sense of camaraderie among the team. Working with such a committed group reinforced the importance of teamwork and how much more we can accomplish together.

Skills Developed:

Communicator: Throughout the process, effective communication was key. Whether it was during brainstorming sessions or on the day of the event, we made sure everyone’s ideas were heard, and feedback was constructive. It kept us aligned and ensured that nothing slipped through the cracks.

Risk-taker: I pushed myself to think outside the box when it came to organizing the event, encouraging my team to do the same. We tried new things and weren’t afraid to get creative, even if it meant stepping out of our comfort zones.

Thinker: I took a strategic approach to planning, analyzing what would resonate with our audience and figuring out the logistics to make sure the event ran smoothly. Anticipating potential challenges helped us stay on track and succeed.

Conclusion

Looking back, organizing the Math Trivia Finals was a challenging but deeply rewarding experience. It allowed me to put my skills to the test in a real-world setting while also developing new ones that I know will serve me well in the future. By working together, staying focused, and pushing through obstacles, we were able to create something we’re all proud of. This experience not only strengthened my love for math and event planning but also gave me a newfound appreciation for the power of teamwork and perseverance. I’m excited to take what I’ve learned into future projects and challenges.
