The 14th of March signifies Pi day for the date of 3.14. In our school, we arrange for stalls of math and science paradoxes, puzzles, activities and food. I was part of the food team where we served Pina Colada, Pizza and Apple Pie. I prepared 4 apple pies from scratch. This experience was filled with fun as maths and cooking are both things that I love.
L1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growthÂ
My strengths here are my patience and baking skills. Making apple pie is quite a difficult process. When I first made the dough for the crust the day before, I also made a small pie for others to taste. This was so they could give me pointers on what was good and what needed to be changed. I got some suggestions and i worked on all of them to make it perfect.
L2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills
Perhaps, my biggest challenge on this journey was time management and proper understanding of materials. I prepared most of my materials the day before but even on the main day, we were running a little behind. this was because I had not calculated the time it would take for the pie in the oven to bake. The 4 pies that i sold on the main day still were sold out way before the time was over. I hadn’t realised that pies would run out.
L7 – Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
I calculated the price it would take for me to make one pie and kept my prices fair for the students. As we were told, the main motive of the day wasn’t to earn profit but to enjoy a day full of maths. Even when selecting all the products for the pie, i made sure i chose all ripe and fresh things for whatever prices than cheap and unhealthy materials.
All things considered, taking part in Pi day was truly an enriching experience as it not only sharpened my various skills but also helped me understand the process for the future.
