The trip to the Kada dam, which is close to a village surrounded by wildlife, was part of the rural immersion experience. Through this excursion, I was able to deeply immerse myself in the life of rural communities by staying in the villages that were close to our campsite. My comprehension of rural life was enhanced through my participation in diverse activities, including touring the villages, meeting with the residents, and obtaining insight into their daily routines. In addition, our visit to a village school gave us a chance to engage in meaningful dialogues and interactions with the kids in addition to fostering play connections with them. My experience was further enhanced by studying traditional skills like weaving bamboo baskets and seeing firsthand activities like cow milking. The trip was made even more exciting by engaging in thrilling activities like zip lining and river crossing.

I embodied a number of the learner profile traits on this journey. I learned a lot about rural living and wildlife protection, demonstrating my ability to acquire new information. Being open-minded I embraced the various viewpoints and ways of life that the villagers had to offer. I was curious, so I asked them about their lifestyle and how well they got along with the environment.

LO1:  Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

In light of the Learning Outcomes (LO), I was able to recognize my areas of personal growth as well as my strengths and cultivate them as a result of this experience. For example, I improved my culinary abilities and gained confidence in my ability to prepare several dishes on my own by taking part in cooking events. In a similar vein, while making bamboo baskets, I realized how rapidly I could pick up new abilities, demonstrating my versatility and capacity for learning.

LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills

Taking on obstacles like river crossing and ziplining, which required me to get over my fear of heights, showed that I was willing to push myself beyond my comfort zone in the name of personal growth. Since I’m an introvert, talking to the other students at the village school was intimidating at first, but with encouragement from my friends, I eventually warmed up and participated in events.

LO3 – Initiate and plan a CAS experience

During the rural immersion experience, I organized and carried out cooperative initiatives by initiating and planning activities. By planning activities and cultural exchanges with the village kids and encouraging cooperation among team members, I made a significant contribution to establishing deep connections and overcoming cultural differences.

LO4 – Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience

I showed tenacity and dedication by embracing the discomfort of spending seven days in an unfamiliar place, easing into the campsite way of life, and giving myself over to the whole experience. Collaborating with my group reaffirmed the value of collaboration by allowing us to support one other’s shortcomings and complete projects quickly. We learnt pottery, it fostered our creativity as everyone made different shapes of pot. It also connects us with cultural traditions, promotes relaxation, and cultivates community. Through clay, we shape art, craft, and personal growth.

LO5 –Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively

We were divided into groups of ten for the duration of our trip, and we carried out all of our activities with them. When we first arrived in the village, we spoke with the residents in Gujarati, their mother tongue, about their problems in life. In addition, my friends helped me improve my abilities by being there to guide me whenever I needed it during the basket weaving sessions. We also worked together to create meals; my group was in charge of cooking sheera, a delicious Indian dish. We were able to make a pretty tasty sheera by assigning roles, and all of my peers were quite impressed. This cooperative endeavor demonstrated the efficiency and efficacy that come with teamwork. Additionally, collaborating as a team allowed us to capitalize on one another’s advantages, minimizing our particular shortcomings and guaranteeing good performance.

LO6 – Engagement with issues of global significance

Engagement with global issues such as quality education, economic growth, and environmental sustainability underscores the interconnectedness of our actions and their broader significance in shaping the world we live in. By actively participating in activities aimed at promoting education and economic empowerment in the village, we not only improved the lives of individuals within the community but also contributed to advancing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and fostering positive change on a larger scale. We also tried promoting sustainable farming practices, or raising awareness about environmental conservation, we took proactive steps to protect the environment and promote sustainable development. In doing so, we contributed to SDG 13: Climate Action and SDG 15: Life on Land, which aim to combat climate change and protect, restore, and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems.

LO7 : Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
In addition, this event made me think about moral issues, especially in light of the villagers’ apparent satisfaction and resiliency in the face of adversity. Their unshakable optimism served as a moving reminder of the value of perseverance and thankfulness in overcoming life’s challenges.

Overall, the rural immersion program was a life-changing experience that gave me insightful knowledge, encouraged personal development, and gave me a greater understanding of how intertwined all communities are. I’m determined to live up to the values of empathy, fortitude, and teamwork in all I do going forward as I think back on the knowledge I’ve received and the experiences I’ve had.
