As part of our CAS experience, I participated in the FS Support Staff Talent Show on 21 September 2024, where I performed a welcome dance for the support staff. This event was a celebration of their incredible talents and hard work, showcasing performances like singing, dancing, and poetry readings. Participating in this activity pushed me out of my comfort zone, as I had never danced before. It allowed me to develop creativity and acquire a completely new skill, reflecting the values of growth, commitment, and teamwork.

LO1: Identify your own strengths and develop areas for personal growth

Dancing was completely uncharted territory for me. While I’ve always appreciated the art, I never imagined myself performing a dance in front of an audience. Preparing for the welcome dance allowed me to explore creativity and discover a newfound appreciation for choreography and expression. Over time, I realized that my strength lay in my willingness to learn and adapt. This experience helped me develop a creative approach to movement and rhythm, areas I had never explored before, contributing significantly to my personal growth.

LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

The biggest challenge was learning to dance from scratch. I had to practice diligently, following choreography, coordinating with my fellow performers, and building confidence to perform on stage. Balancing rehearsals with academic responsibilities tested my time-management skills. Despite initial hesitations, I embraced the challenge, and through consistent practice, I developed a new skill. The performance was far from perfect, but the joy of completing it successfully outweighed any mistakes.

LO3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience

The preparation for the dance involved several stages. I collaborated with a group to choose a culturally appropriate and engaging routine to welcome the support staff. We divided the choreography into manageable sections, assigned roles, and scheduled practice sessions. I ensured that we incorporated feedback from peers and supervisors to refine the performance. Planning and organizing the dance taught me the importance of setting clear goals and maintaining focus to execute a plan successfully.

LO4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences

Learning a completely new skill like dancing required significant dedication. There were moments of frustration when I couldn’t master certain steps, but I persevered, practicing repeatedly until I got them right. Rehearsals often stretched into breaks and after-school hours, but my commitment to making the performance a memorable experience for the support staff kept me motivated. The applause and smiles on their faces at the end of the show made all the effort worthwhile.

LO5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively

The dance performance was not a solo effort—it required teamwork and coordination. Working collaboratively with my fellow performers helped us synchronize our movements and support one another during rehearsals. We motivated each other through difficult parts of the routine, demonstrating the power of collective effort. This experience reinforced the importance of open communication, patience, and trust when working with a team.

LO6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance

This talent show emphasized the importance of SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth). By organizing this event, we recognized the vital contributions of the support staff to our school community and created a platform for them to relax, showcase their talents, and feel appreciated. Activities like these promote mental well-being and foster a sense of community, demonstrating how cultural events can improve the quality of life for everyone involved.

Reflection:
Participating in the Support Staff Talent Show was a transformative experience for me. It pushed me to embrace creativity, develop a new skill, and celebrate the contributions of an integral part of our school community. This activity taught me that growth begins where comfort ends, and with perseverance and teamwork, even the most unfamiliar challenges can lead to meaningful achievements.
