CAS Hosting a football tournament (project)

On September 14, 2024, I had the exhilarating opportunity to host a football tournament as part of my CAS project. This experience, conducted within our school premises, was not just a fun and engaging event, but also a fulfilling learning journey that allowed me to grow in multiple areas. The experience aligned with the Creativity, Activity, and Service by requiring innovation in planning, active participation, and service to the school community.

The process of hosting the tournament was more complex than I initially expected. From organizing the fixtures to ensuring smooth coordination with teams and referees, each step presented its own set of challenges. For example, last-minute changes in team availability and referees needing better instructions pushed me to think on my feet and adjust the schedule without causing disruption. This enabled me to demonstrate Learning Outcome 3 (LO3) – Initiating and planning a CAS experience, where I had to structure the event from start to finish, managing the smallest details while keeping the bigger picture in mind.

Throughout the tournament, I also demonstrated Learning Outcome 5 (LO5) – Working collaboratively with others. This was evident in my ability to delegate responsibilities to a team of volunteers who assisted with tasks such as setting up the venue, managing registrations, and ensuring the smooth flow of matches. Effective collaboration was crucial, as the event’s success depended on clear communication and teamwork. By fostering a cooperative environment, I not only built trust and camaraderie within the team but also learned the importance of leveraging diverse strengths to achieve a common goal. This experience reinforced my belief in the power of collective effort and the value of building strong interpersonal relationships.

Throughout the event, I encountered various obstacles that required me to develop new skills. Managing the expectations of both participants and spectators under pressure taught me the importance of clear communication and quick decision-making. These challenges helped me fulfill Learning Outcome 2 (LO2) Demonstrating that challenges have been undertaken, and new skills developed. For example, I learned how to be more adaptable when things did not go as planned, such as rescheduling matches due to weather conditions, and improved my ability to lead a team by effectively delegating tasks

Learning Outcome 4 (LO4) – Showing perseverance and commitment in CAS activities, was another significant aspect of this experience. The tournament required weeks of planning and countless hours of preparation, from initial brainstorming sessions to final execution. There were moments when managing the logistics, accommodating last-minute changes, and balancing my academic workload felt overwhelming, but my dedication to seeing the project through kept me motivated. Staying committed despite the challenges taught me the importance of resilience and determination, qualities that were critical to the tournament’s success.

In addition to the tangible outcomes, I developed important IB Learner Profile attributes throughout this experience. As a Communicator, I sharpened my ability to liaise with teams, referees, and spectators, ensuring that everyone was on the same page. As a Leader, I took charge of the planning and execution of the tournament, managing every aspect, from setting up fixtures to troubleshooting any issues that arose on the day. Being Open-Minded allowed me to work with participants from different backgrounds, helping me embrace diverse perspectives and ensuring the event catered to everyone’s needs. Balancing the tournament alongside my academic workload pushed me to become more Balanced, learning how to prioritize my time effectively. Finally, as a Reflective learner, I analyzed the event afterward, considering what went well and where I could improve for future projects.

The tournament also aligned with two key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – Good Health and Well-Being and Gender Equality. Encouraging students to actively engage in sports helps promote physical fitness and mental well-being. Moreover, I ensured that the event promoted gender equality by including both boys’ and girls’ teams, providing an inclusive platform where everyone could participate equally.

In conclusion, hosting this football tournament was an incredibly rewarding experience that allowed me to grow in numerous ways. I was able to apply my skills in organization, leadership, and communication while also fostering a sense of teamwork and community engagement. Through overcoming challenges, I developed new skills and gained insights into what it takes to manage a large-scale event successfully. Most importantly, I learned the value of adaptability, teamwork, and perseverance—qualities that will undoubtedly be beneficial in future endeavors.
