Community Clean up

Date: 17th september 2023, 16th January 2024 , 19th January 2024 , 20th february 2024

This clean up was organized by our school and we were taken to different places in Surat which were littered by the public. We also went to clean the ponds which had algae grown all over them. Due to this algae, the supply of oxygen underwater was a concern so the plants and animals living under water were dying. During this community clean up we tried removing algae from the surface of the pond using different instruments. Removing the algae was very difficult because the roots were very strongly connected with each other underwater. Through this activity we learnt how important it is to keep our surroundings clean. While we were picking up litter people observing us also learned the lesson of keeping our surroundings clean.

LO4 – Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences
I had shown a consistent commitment and perseverance for the community clean up. I consistently participated in the clean-up sessions, demonstrating a strong commitment despite scheduling challenges. Balancing late-night studying with early morning clean-ups often meant sacrificing sleep, but I persevered because I understood the importance of the cause. Furthermore, balancing with other school events happening alongside the clean-up sessions was difficult to balance. The sessions used to happen during chilly winter mornings, yet I remained committed attending all the sessions.

LO5 – Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
I demonstrated and developed communication and social skills during this CAS activity. Effective communication is important for successful clean-up. This is because while working together we have to make sure that we listen to each other carefully and attentively and then perform the task. So for example, when we went to clean the pond; it was important to listen to the instructor attentively before starting to clean and going in the water, also when we were removing the algae we performed a group task. We formed a human chain and passed the algae removed from the water to each other until it reached the disposal area. So, for this collaboration skills and communication is very important and this is how working collaboratively can help complete tasks faster and efficiently.

LO6 – Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
For LO6, engagement with global issues was demonstrated through active involvement in discussions, research, and actions related to environmental conservation and sustainability. This engagement involved understanding the broader implications of local actions, such as community clean-ups, on global issues like pollution, climate change, and ecosystem degradation. By participating in clean-up activities, researching environmental challenges, and discussing potential solutions with peers and experts, a deeper awareness of global environmental issues was cultivated. Additionally, efforts to advocate for sustainable practices within the community further contributed to engagement with global significance by promoting awareness and action on a larger scale.
