A community cleanup brings volunteers together to clean, repair, and improve public spaces or other areas. I volunteered for this experience and I was supposed to participate in 4 community cleanup drives in order to complete this experience. I demonstrated Service out of the three strands of CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service).

Learning Outcome 4 – Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience:

Community cleanup is not a one-time event; it requires ongoing effort and dedication to make a lasting impact. During the course of this project, I committed myself to participating in weekly cleanup drives, despite varying weather conditions and demanding schedules. There were moments when the workload felt overwhelming, especially when faced with large areas of litter or heavy items. However, by consistently showing up and pushing through challenges, I learned the importance of perseverance. This commitment paid off when we started seeing tangible improvements in the cleanliness of our environment, motivating me to continue contributing to similar causes.

Learning Outcome 5 – Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively:

Cleaning up an entire community area is not a task that can be accomplished alone. Through this experience, I had the opportunity to work closely with other volunteers, local residents, and community organizations. Collaboration was key to our success. We had to coordinate tasks, share tools, and communicate effectively to maximize our efforts. I developed teamwork and leadership skills, as I sometimes took on roles that required organizing and directing groups. By working together, we achieved much more than any individual could have accomplished alone, and I gained a deeper appreciation for the power of collective effort.

Learning Outcome 6 – Engagement with issues of global significance:

Littering and waste mismanagement are global environmental issues that directly contribute to problems such as pollution, habitat destruction, and climate change. Through my involvement in this community cleanup, I became more aware of how local actions can either contribute to or mitigate global challenges. The trash we collected, such as plastic bottles and wrappers, reminded me of the growing global plastic waste crisis. By engaging in this cleanup, I felt connected to a larger movement of people worldwide working to protect the environment. This experience reinforced my responsibility as a global citizen to take action on environmental issues, starting at the local level.
