Fresher’s is an event that is hosted every year by the senior batch for the junior batch as a welcome to DP year 1.
LO1: Identify your own strengths and develop areas for personal growth
While working on the event, I realized my strengths in creative thinking and teamwork. However, I also recognized the need to improve my time management skills, especially when multiple tasks competed for attention.
LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
We faced the challenge of executing a sustainable yet visually impressive event. This taught me resourcefulness in using eco-friendly decor and improved my organizational skills.
LO3: Initiating and Planning a CAS Experience
The preparation started weeks before the event, as the decoration team took on the responsibility of transforming the venue into a vibrant space that matched the excitement and energy of the evening. From brainstorming themes to organizing materials, we focused on creating an ambiance that would make the juniors feel special. This task required not only creativity but also meticulous planning. I learned to balance the different elements involved, from sourcing sustainable decor items to managing the team’s timeline effectively.
LO4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences
Despite the tight deadlines and heavy academic workload, our team remained committed to the event’s success. We tackled each obstacle one by one, persevering through stressful moments.
LO5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
Working together as a team was crucial. Collaborating with others taught me the importance of communication and shared responsibility, reinforcing that collective effort often leads to better outcomes.
LO6: Engagement with Issues of Global Significance
One of our key decisions was to incorporate eco-friendly decorations. With climate change and sustainability becoming increasingly important global issues, we wanted to align the event with these values. Instead of using single-use plastics, we opted for biodegradable materials, reusable fabrics, and energy-efficient lighting. This choice was a small step toward raising awareness within our school community about environmental responsibility. Through these efforts, we hoped to inspire others to think more consciously about the environmental impact of their events and choices.
LO7: Recognizing the Ethics of Choices and Actions
Planning this party also made me reflect on the ethics of our actions. As seniors, we wanted to ensure that the juniors felt welcomed and included in every aspect of the event. This meant being mindful of how we represented school traditions and creating a respectful, inclusive environment where everyone could have fun. Additionally, I considered the labor and resources involved in the decor process, ensuring that we worked fairly with vendors and used materials responsibly.
Ultimately, being part of the decor team for the Freshers’ Party was an enriching experience that extended beyond just making the venue look beautiful. It allowed me to develop as a leader, engage with global concerns like sustainability, and make ethical decisions that contributed positively to the school community.
