Math has always been one of my favorite subjects in school, i am always excited for it. It’s the hunger to solve tough questions that drives me towards loving math. 14th March, the day that is officially known as ‘Pi day’ that is also the day Einstein was born. This is commonly celebrated as math day as well. This was the second year this event is taking place, a celebration of math and physics. “When will we actually get to celebrate these subjects like this in our future lives?” this was the inspiration of this event. We prepared decorations at a venue, stalls with games, puzzles, hard problems, food, drinks, simulations to embrace the thrill of limitless learning(like PI). As a part of a stall during the event, we had to technically ‘serve’ students and entertain them with our questions and JEOPARDY! game.
LO1 – [Identifying Strengths and Growth Areas]
During the Pi Day event, I recognized my strengths in organization and problem-solving, especially when managing the stall and interacting with participants. I was able to engage students effectively in the Jeopardy! game and other activities, making the experience enjoyable and educational. However, I also identified areas for growth, such as improving my ability to handle time constraints and multitask efficiently in a fast-paced event setting. This experience helped me develop better event management skills and adapt quickly to unexpected challenges.
LO3 – [Initiating and Planning a CAS experience]
Organizing this Math Festival required careful planning, coordination, and collaboration among students, teachers, and volunteers. From conceptualizing the event to securing resources, delegating tasks, and ensuring its smooth execution. So I was part of the JEOPARDY game stall, where we had to come up with intriguing questions of various difficulties and categories, also as per the students coming from different grades(9,10,11).
LO4 – [Perseverance and Commitment]
Me and my stall mate faced many problems and hurdles with creating enticing questions that would also be solved within small periods of times by various students of different grades. With tight deadlines of the event preparations(including stall prep) and even academic submissions. There were even pull out slots where we dedicated time during math slots and even free slots, also coming in early during multiple occasions. Not just us, each and every event team had dedicated themselves fully towards the event.
LO5 – [Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively]
I had made the decision to divide our stall tasks, the questions, topics and making the board. I handled making the JEOPARDY boards for the MYP students, the questions-categories of Grade 9-10. I made 50 questions of various difficulty. Then my partner handled the DP JEOPARDY board, making questions for 11th grade mathematics and also handled the resources we required for the stall at the event – requiring critical thinking skills to carefully design the questions as per students, communicating with the resource leader and mentors. We as an event team also had to communicate and collaborate on creating the layout of all the stalls, where it would be logically fit and aligned with the physical venue layout. Divided stalls into separate general themes, the games, puzzles, physics, problems, simulations- allotted separate areas. This required everyone to be collaborative and provide their inputs on which would be the most appropriate and suitable for the event.
